Kindig does some nice work., completely different style of shop. I like his door handles, look similar to the 69-72 GP handles but shaved.
I watched this episode again yesterday. The owner didn't have this car. The $75,000 was for Dan to find a red 1972 GS and do his "thing" I guess the owner had a red 72 in his younger days and wanted one again. No mention if he wanted a BBB or SBB. Please I don't want 72GS to take it as a insult. Dan get burned by not seeing a small amount of floor rot on the passenger side rear floor panel, could be his spotter goofed up as I don't think that car was local. The guy wanted cruise control and a rear defogger added. Could you get cruise on a 4 speed? because Dan said they never put cruise on manuals. They showed them taking out a TH350 or some BOP auto tranny but never mentioned getting a donor car for the pedals and 4 speed parts. He would usually make a stink about how hard it is to go from auto to manual. 72gs4, was this a manual car from the factory? I just cannot stand the stupid dark music that they play and the looks Dan and the mechanics give each other when they find a rusted brake line on a 50 year old car They show a leaf spring rear end on the floor that was supposed to come off this GS when they put the 12 bolt in. Has anyone seen his 20 mini episodes of his route 66 drive in his 63? vette. It had a few "breakdowns" on the cruise but never show them fixing it. Just random parts and pieces on the ground. I think one pic was of a oil filter! He got like 15 views. 72gs4sp will do his magic i'm sure..
The brake and clutch pedal pads were in the trunk when I bought it. Guess the previous owner bought them but never installed. ( new owner took care of it)
Aside from the flywheel and 5335 handle, small block 4 speed parts are surprisingly readily available. They repro virtually everything. The z bar, clutch fork and upper clutch rod all interchanges with 442s. The 581 bellhousing is a pretty common piece used across poniac, buick and olds.
YES !!! Just because you have a $15,000 watch on your arm is not a sign of Success ! Same if you drive around town in a Masserati or top of the line Mercedes . Its only monthly payments until they repossess it !!
Thought I just had bad grounds to the taillights. Turns out they didn’t replace the seals for the lens housing allowing water to short out the DIGI-TAILS lights. Would have also been nice if they put all the brackets on the bumper before they installed it and tightened the bolts. Fantom Works strikes again.
That’s terrible! One thing I did like on that show was the opening credits remark: “If we have to choose between you and your car……….we’re not picking you”.
That is just rude! As a novice I ask, is this a common practice, to just stuff a LED panel into an old housing and lens with no gaskets? This is restoration?
In short, no that’s not how it’s supposed to be done. It seems like the kind of shop that simply cared about how stuff “appeared” for TV vs the actual functionality or long term reliability. The new owner is aware of this type of repairs so they will be going through the car front to back I’m sure. Crazy as it is someone paid the shop $75000 for this type of repair.
The old seal that is in the housing does not look that bad. My guess that LED panel does not let it seal correctly. Looks like the problem is between the two pockets in how they are supposed to seal separately.
I believe the seal should be put in after the lights beings the boards were warped as well. The other side the seal just fell apart. Let’s just say a little more attention to detail will be spent when they’re replaced.
I think it’s somewhat common for ‘restorers’ to think the finished product will be stored and shown, not driven like real cars, so they’re not as weatherproof as they were when built. Apparently they’re often not tuned, either. I remember several magazine shootouts in the ‘80s where supposed 400+ hp cars got put on the trailer by well tuned and driven Buicks, Pontiacs and Oldses. Well I must say I’m impressed with DIGI-TAILS. I emailed them if they do repairs. They replied next day requesting pictures and I sent them last night. Received reply today to mail them the displays and if they can’t be repaired they’ll send replacements. AT NO CHARGE even though it’s due to water damage due to poor installation. That’s going above and beyond in my book. Now if I could only back charge a certain someone for my labor. LOL
