I recently acquired a GS air cleaner. It is GS455 housing. I was test fitting it on my 350. Are the GS350 cleaners the same as the GS455 cleaners. Seems like it’s hitting on the fitting where the fuel goes into the carb. I have a Holley carb, is there a spacer or something. Also seems like the hole to the air cleaner is bigger then where it sits on the carb. Help please!
Without damaging the base, no. They fit pretty close. When properly seated just clearing distributor, radiator hose plug wire, etc. I looked at some air cleaners- all stock gm , after a while I could recognize the Holley type bases even when seller does not. The bowls front and back require reliefs on cleaner floor to clear inlet screws? Atop. . Eventually hoping to replace sbb with chevy, I considered Z-28 dual snorkel. I think they have one for holley/ one for rochester + would have bought it, but it didn't come with the hot air doors
I used to make adapters to put stock air cleaners on holley and quick fuel carbs and got nothing but criticism and negativity for it.
The little filter inside air cleaner is on one side for 69 engine. on other side for 70.. The rochester for 69 has forward facing fuel inlet. Then the thermostat has specific studs that lock housing+ attach a hard to find support that air cleaner rests on. The upper radiator hose not only has to be specified for ram air but it too has its own support to keep hose over PS belt.
Alright this is what I have. I have a 71 Skylark 350. When I bought it, previous owner had installed a Holley carb with a stock Buick 350 air cleaner. I changed to an chrome after market cleaner soon after. I recently acquired a GS air cleaner to make my GS hood functional. The GS cleaner I have is either a 70 or 71 as it has the little filter on the inside to the right as you are looking at it. It also has both square ram air inlets instead of the right triangle inlet of the 72. I have the support bracket, that supposedly a 350 support that I got from GSFred. I have foam seals and seal plates that I got from Todd Miller. I am just trying to understand why this don't fit and how to remedy it. If my car came stock with a quadrajet and my stock air cleaner fits both it and the Holley, why doesn't the GS filter fit both the quadrajet and the holley? Am I missing something? I just want to put this on my car so I can be one step closer to the conversion, any help would be appreciated
Not all Holley fuel lines are the same. You said it is hitting on the fuel line. You may need to modify or change that. Both carburetors should need a 5 1/8" opening. On some of the stock air cleaners, there is a tab that fits into the top of the Quadrajet carburetor flange if I remember correctly. What we really need is a picture of what you are dealing with. The Skylark 350 never came with a Holley carburetor. Also there are different Holley carburetors, which one do you have? You may need to use a spacer. They are available everywhere. You should have plenty of hood clearance. BTW, I can't tell from your avatar whether you have a GS hood or not.
Also, FYI, based on other comments here, I don't think you should expect much of a gain from the "ram air" on your GS style setup. It seems this wasn't as functional as one would hope. I am only basing this statement on what others with more knowledgeable have stated here in the forums.
How does the car run? Does it take off when the secondary opens. I don't believe my hot air doors R working + the guy that installed points eliminater and one wire alternator disconnected the vacuum line to them.
Post a pic of the GS air cleaner sitting in position atop the Holley carb so we can see where/what is hitting what
