It looks like it focuses coolant right to the impeller portion of the water pump… just curious if anybody has heard of this? Thoughts

That just looks like some kind of repair to me.

    That is no repair job.
Its a modification to use the TA performance Water pump on a stock timing cover and perform properly...

Yea, it was done by the machine shop and I was told to get the TA water pump… I had no idea though that it was specifically for it.

FWIW the power steering belt is very close to the TA pump.. At least on the BBB in the 67 A-body Had I known that I would have put a file to the pump for clearance....

When I fired up my motor at first I about poop my pants. Then the belt wore down after a short time....

That’s good to know because at first when he said he wanted to do some welding on my timing cover and needed me to bring him my gasket from the TA water pump…. I was skeptical lol

I will have to keep an eye on that, thanks. This was a long shaft model from a 75 Electra so maybe I will be ok.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

So is the area indicated with arrows ground down to be lower? I think this must be the case although this is hard to tell from the photos...

Then I suppose the welded bead is to build up that area and improve the flow... I spent a chunk time looking at this to make sense of it (hopefully).

Well that's a new one on me Bob. Is it absolutely necessary in order to use the HD TA Pump, or does it enhance it? Is the TA cover already modified? Just a stock cover needs it? I believe I have the latest TA Catalog. Why can't I find any reference notes or instruction sheets like they have for other products at the back of the catalog?

The welded section is built up like a small wall to direct coolant right at the High flow TA water pump which is not exposed like the factory one so I am assuming it gets less benefit from the wide opening that the factory housing and pump could benefit from. I could take some closer photos at different angles if you would like to see more?

Larry, I looked at the TA cover as well and it doesn’t appear to be any different in this area than the factory one. The impeller on the HD pump is shrouded unlike the factory one which is open, so it does make sense to have this mod as it channels the coolant right into the shrouded impeller.

Yeah, I can't really tell from the pictures. I've never seen anything from TA on this. I find that strange. Is it really necessary? Be nice if Mike T could comment on it.

Is that bead the only difference?

That bead is the same and that is actually a better picture than the one I saw. I may have looked at the wrong cover on the TA website because the picture you posted appears to have that wall on it.

Is it absolutely necessary in order to use the HD TA Pump? NO. But dot use the TA gasket.

Does it enhance it? Kind of iffy. The stock gasket has that piece MIA. So the Supply & Return are no fully sealed from each other.... The stock cover doesn't have the fat edge for the TA gasket to seal to so why use it. It will be flapping in the wind waiting to break off and, come to rest and block a passage...

TA cover already modified? Yes my TA cover has the Fat flat gasket ledge....

Just a stock cover needs it? I dont if all TA covers have the Fat edge..... ( FWIW the TA catalog shows thin edge... Old pictures? ).... Just dont use the TA gasket on the thin edge. Or remove the portion of the gasket..
