Just how hard do you have to push or tap the side bearing shims in? Don't want slop and don't want to have to pound them in with a hammer.

Hammer and a punch or just slide them in..........

There should be roughly .008-.010 preload on the carrier bearings........now its very hard to measure this......the way I was shown involved getting shims in there by hand till you could measure very little side to side play with an indicator....say .004. Then you can do math....004 plus. 010 is. 014....divided equally is .007 more per pack......now you had proper preload and you could move on with setting backlash.....

In the end you will need to lightly tap shims in and you should need to use a prybar to help slide it out......if if slides out without resistance you need more.....but too much and you will swear its all going to go flying out.....

But if you must add, add evenly to both sides or it will effect backlash.

I use a light hammer tap and brass drift to tap shims in.... if you pucker them they are junk......so put smaller shim between thicker ones to protect them

That is what i was looking for . I pushed them in but it was hard to do with a 1" x 12" brass shaft i had on the bench. Thanx , It may be a little snug but i will leave it. I fell better thanx again..:)
