I'm having problems using Netscape 4.7 to post replies...

The Quick Reply box at the bottom of the thread isn't there with Netscape and when clicking on the "Post Reply" icon at the bottom of the thread, the next page opens up but no box is there to type in...

Any fixes for this(didn't have any problems with the old bulletin board version, pre-hack crash)...I really don't want to upgrade my Netscape version and I really, really don't want to use IE(which is what I'm using right now)...

    Thanks...

I can't think of any fixes, and I know you don't want to hear this, but why not upgrade to the Mozilla web browser (or Mozilla Firefox).

Netscape is basically Mozilla with AOL stuff thrown on the top, and the latest Firefox (www.mozilla.org) is great, with tabbed browsing, popup blocking, and lots of extensions to add new functions.

Wow...Just DL'd Firefox...Seems to be working great...Gotta try out some other websites to see what they look like...With Netscape, I was always having to switch back and forth between NS and IE when something didn't look right...Now I just need to see if I will need to do that with Firefox...But so far, so good...

    Thanks!!!

I'm glad you like it. Have you set it to block popups and to use Tabs for browsing? I love those features.

Be sure to go to the "Tools" menu and choose "Extensions." You'll see a link in the lower corner named "Get More Extensions." This will open a web page with various things you can add. You get only the features you want this way - so the bloating stays to a minimum.

One of my favorite extensions is Ad Block. It lets you prevent ads from appearing on pages. You have to train it, though. Right-click on an ad image and choose "Adblock Image" from the menu that appears - a window with the URI appears and you tell it to block. It will block only that image, but you can add and asterisk (*) at the appropriate part of the URI so it will block all things from the particular server.

For example, if you go to yahoo, and there is an ad from www.ad.something.com, just add "/*" at the end and every image from that site is blocked. Of course, you have to play and get the hang of it. If you make a mistake, you can always remove it from the list.

Firefox is more compliant with web standards than M$IE. However, many people use M$ products to make their pages, so some of those pages only look good in the M$ browser.

Firefox (which is Mozilla, which is what Netscape uses), is also more secure. A byproduct of this is that there is no ActiveX (among other things). So some sites may not work well (and others won't download spyware without your knowledge either).

As far as shockwave and other plugins, you'll have to go to their sites, download the installers, and install them yourself; unfortunately. This isn't too hard, though, and if the only version they offer is "Netscape," that should work for you.

I've been using Firefox on my Windows and Linux computers for over a year now. It is wonderful, and its great to see the browser finally hit version 1.0.
