Did they ever make a center console for a 65' Skylark that was an automatic on the column? I've only seen auto and 4 spd center consoles just wondering if the ever made one without the cutout.

    Thanks,
    Steve

I believe they call it the iron board style console. That is what they used in 64 and maybe 65. They sell for around 250 on ebay. They may have used the regular 4 speed in 65.

The iron board model you are talking about, do you know if it has no cutout for shifters and was made for column shift models?

I would like to try and find one for my 65' that I can use. I haven't been able to find any on ebay that worth buying anyway. I sure would like to see some pictures of one up close.

Anybody know if these were an option back then? Maybe a dealer installed option?

Sorry for any dumg questions, new to all of this and Buicks.

    Thanks,
    Steve

Thanks guys, that really helps me out a lot. I had never seen one like that before. Now I have to try and find one of these without breaking the bank.

Any ideas on where to find one? I will keep trying ebay to see if one pops up.

The ironing board console is probably not correct for the 65. There is another console called the short console that was used beginning in 65 and for several years afterwards. They show up on eBay from time to time and if the top is in good shape are not very difficult to restore. Here's a link to one on eBay

If you look for one make sure the top is not split or cracked. Here's a picture of mine. [IMG]

Dan I thought that was the 4 speed console and the column auto had the other style?

Maybe Brian Stone our 64-65 expert could clear this up? :Smarty:

Ed, I learn something new again. I emailed Brian and his response was -
"Ironing board is correct for regular skylarks, the low style like is in my GS only came in the GS cars--it was designed because the GM style shifter they used in the 4-speed GS cars hits the ironing board style when it is in 2nd and 4th gear. The regular skylarks with 4-speeds had a hurst shifter from the factory that doesn't have as much travel, so the shifter doesn't come anywhere near hitting the ironing board style."
Thanks for bringing up the issue.

Dan, I email Brian a lot and he seems to be a good guy. He will always reply and I think thats great.

I think red is the coolest color interior and think both you and Brian have the coolest 65 GS I have ever seen. :TU:

Ironing Board consoles came in both 64 and 65 model cars, including 65 specials and skylarks. In 1965 they were called "Short Console, First Type" in order to draw a distinction from the spring lid type with the emblem on top introduced in 65 which was called "Short console, Second type" which ran until the 70 model year. (In 65 the First Type was also available in Wildcats.) In the 70 model year it became known as the 1970 Short Console First Type in order to distinguish it from the 1970 Second Type which replaced the clam shell lid with a push button latch. It continued until 72 when the accordion door mini console was introduced.

I pulled the white Ironing Board console in the pic linked above from a 65 with matching white interior.

There is one more caveat that Brian kicked in before. He stated that the bottom concours for the Ironoing Board models were different for th Non A bodies like the B body Wildcat. I do not see that distinction in the Parts Books but I would not doubt what he says.
