We use it on the front diffs on chevy 4WD right axle tubes at the dealershuip and any aluminum cases without gaskets. I just used it to hold the gaskets in place to get a correct alignment when I installed the intake.

Next the intake. Wow what a difference on the alignment of the ports. They were way too small and off to the sides. Here is a pic of the ports when I put the gaskets on the intake. I mounted the intake with heads intalled with old head gaskets and tightend down about 50 foot lbs. Then I cut the intake gaskets along the outer suface of the intake and then took the intake back off the engine and lined them up to the outer surface, "intake removed", to see where they were positioned when installed.

I would be interested in your oil pan.

I also have a halo girdle on my engine and bought one of Steve Raynolds pans.

One last look before the oil pan goes on. Here is a pic of my pan. I had to add 2" to make it 6 QT and had to weld a piece on the shallow part to get clearance for the halo girdle. I painted it with red engine paint then I was going to give it a touch of marroon and when the paint looked like small cracks I realized that I used Laquer over Enamel. Oops. :Dou:
I used a 454 pick up screen and welded it to the Buick tube.

You can forget the idea of taking the pan off with the engine still in the car.

One thing you are going to need to do is take the zerk fitting off the inner tie rods. By doing this you will only gain a couple or degreese of turning and have less of a chance of poking a hole in the oil pan. At least that is how it is with mine.

My pan is very close to the cross member.

I have never checked but there is no dents in the pan from that. I will check when I put it in. I have just enough clearance for a diaper amazing enough. I new from day one that I would never pull the pan with the engine still in the car. On my car when I build it will have a removable cross member or none at all. Ths car is owned by Todd Bender and he would't want me to cut his out since it's a original 70 GS 455 car. That's why I'm building my own so I can cut or weld on it to make it like I want it. Easy to work on will be my first priority but keeping it safe also.

I put the heads on and now putting in the Smith Brothers push rods. I take it the rounded ball type end goes toward the rockers for clearance correct?

Got the heads and the Harlen Sharp rockers on. Next I will pump up the oiling system to see if it's all getting oil and see what the pressure is with the 1/2" drill.

Ok I just hooked up the oil gauge and the 1/2 in. drill and cranked it up.
When I put the oil pump together I didn't pack it with vaseline. All I did was a little lube on the gears. Before I put the oil pan on I filled the pick up screen with oil till it ran out of the engine somewhere. Put the heads and rockers on and tilted the engine so the oil filter adaptor was high enough to put a funnel in it. I poured maybe a 1/2 pint and had to turn the pump drive to get it out of the funnel. I put the oil filter back on dry. Rotated the engine upright again and turned the pump drive with my hand. I heard noises in the vally and oil shot out where the gauge was suppose to be hooked up at the back of the engine. I put the oil gauge and the drill on and let it rip. Instantly I had almost 50lbs at the gauge. I set up the camera and took a pic while using the drill.

I painted the bottom side of the intake with ceramic white header paint to help keep it cool. I don't think you can run an oil splash shield with this intake. It hangs down to low. Has anyone here made one for this intake?

Thanks Gary but I think the bottom part of the intake being apart from the top should be enough to keep the heat from reaching the intake runners. I might use it if I drive it on the street.
I'm ready to mount the intake but just making sure there isn't anything I can do before that. I hate it when you put a part on and then say I should of could of if you know what I mean.

Working on the 462 today and then the storm hit. Power went out so we kept working on it with flash lights after a chip and dip break. Got it sitting in there and had a couple of drips from the front seal when I turned it over by hand to get No. one lined up so I will pull the balancer and see whats up.

    Ron,

What is the power range of your camshaft?

At what RPM does your engine idle?

In your video the engine sounds bad ass.

It's a Kenne Bell 7XR when I get home I will put the cam sheet pic on here. It's a big Hydraulic.

Here's the cam card. It idles 800 to 1000. Designed by Jim Bell to keep Buicks ahead in the performance wars. For all out racing only. Cannot be street driven, so he says, This cam has as much duration as a big roller cam, 282 at .050! Standard cam for a bracket Stage 2 or all out Stage 1. The next step up for more power is an exspensive roller cam. Absolutely the biggest, wildest, most powerful cam for the 430-455 Buick, too big for a 400, picks up.15/1.5 MPH over the Mark 5HB. Must have complete cam kit, Big notched pistons, a 4000 stall, ported heads and all the good stuff. Unmatched power between 4000-7500. The choice of such notable Buick racers as Fred Catlin. Oh he needs to add me to that, "Ron Kicksome Butz"!
Tht's what it says in his catalogue. :beer
I didn't upload the pic of the card but when I get home I will. Here is another pic but don't think you can see it.

    Ok here's the card.

I GOT THE BEAST RUNNING LAST NIGHT! ok caps off. Didn't have much time to run it because it was late and I had no coolant in it. I made a short video of the start up but I don't think you can download on here so I will have to put it on youtube 1st. I should be able to run it longer this evening and get the timing set. I might even go through the valve adjustment. It should be close since nothing was changed in the valve train or head surface. It sounds more radical with that cool runner like I might have to idle it up a little. That video might be on facebook under Big Butz Racing since I loaded it on my facebook. I can't check that here at work. "Restricted"
