Where could I find some good engine pictures of a 1970 455 with ram air? I recently purchased a 1970 Skylark Conv with 455 & ram air. It was put together with a collection of zip ties, black tape, even some lag bolts and lots of black paint. I would like to put it back like it should be. Most of the vacuum lines were either plugged or not hooked up The wires that laid across the intake were mostly melted. I have purchased most of the stuff to put back as it should. Not trying to make it a concours car, just make it right. Thanks in advance Jim

Best way is to search the forum. There are lots of examples of restoration projects, concourse restorations etc. look at the detailing section as well there is tons of stuff out there just have to spend some time finding it.

    Hope that helps

Here are a couple of shots of the engine bay in my 1970 GS 455. It's not totally concourse but visually correct to anyone but a show judge. If you want details on vacuum lines and electrical connections, you should get a 1970 Buick Chassis manual which has enough illustrations to hook anything up right.

The pics are of an early GS455 produced before the end of 1969. The later builds used a radiator recovery tank with a black top and the radiator cover was metal instead of the plastic earlier type. I should also mention that the chrome valve covers only came standard with the Stage 1 option. On a non-stage 1 GS they were engine red.

Thank you Terry, I've searched forums with engine pictures being topic, not much luck. I'll keep looking. Thank you Ray

I took these at this year’s nationals.
Sorry they won’t help much with vacuum lines but maybe they will work for other stuff

I think you are making a mistake when you think that you need all the vacuum connections as stock in order for the engine to run well. For one, most of the vacuum connections had to do with emissions control, and actually made the engine run worse. Depending on the Quadrajet you currently have, some ports need to be blocked off. This is especially true with late model emissions calibrated Q-jets. All you really need are a few vacuum connections.

    1) vacuum advance connection from carburetor to vacuum advance on the distributor. You can use ported or manifold vacuum, your choice.

    2) one manifold vacuum connection at the back of the carburetor base plate to the vacuum storage container for the climate control

    3) If you are using the ram air cleaner and you want the vacuum doors in the snorkels to work, all you need is one manifold vacuum connection to one side of the temperature sensor located in the air cleaner base.

    4) manifold vacuum for the transmission vacuum modulator. The intake has a port for this at the back of the intake, passenger side.

    5) power brake vacuum. Back of the intake, driver's side.

    6) PCV valve. 3/8" fuel line hose from the front of the carburetor base plate, looped around the passenger side of the intake to the PCV valve at the rear of the intake. There is a molded hose made for this, but you can use plain 3/8" fuel line hose.

    That is really it.

The stock engine used a 3 port thermo-vacuum switch in the front of the intake, and a vacuum solenoid for the Transmission Controlled Spark System. You don't need any of that. The engine will run better without it.

That is the correct Quadrajet for the 1970 455. Post a picture of your engine as it currently is.

I have it all apart as far as P/S pump, alt, carb, ex manifold, and all the brackets. Plan on painting engine as it was a poorly painted chevy orange right now, so most of the orange is striped off

OMG, that is sacrilege!:D:D Cheby Orange! Glad you are correcting that.:)

Yup, somebody along the line went crazy with orange & black paint. I'm trying to do cosmetic restoration. Its pretty hilarious, painted wires and all. The fan shroud was not correct and put on with a piece of angle aluminum and lag bolts. Do the wires running to alt, coil, just lay on intake?

Yes, but they should be wrapped up in tape. There is a sheet metal piece that attaches to the center inboard valve cover bolt that provides a Guide for the harness. It's probably missing.

ok, don't believe the sheet metal piece is there. The wires were wrapped up in a piece of plastic tubing with zip ties around it, which of course was melted somewhat. I have a couple of 72 Camaros. One Z-28 one an RS, both with original drivetrain. One thing I've figured out, parts for this Buick are why more $$$ than Camaro parts.

Yeah, that metal piece keeps the harness from sitting on the exhaust crossover portion of the intake.

    Can they be found anywhere?

Not really sure. I Pm'd Todd and described it to him. We will see. If Todd doesn't have one, I bet Bruno does.
