Guys this is for a friend who has a 62 Impala with a 350. When the car is running there’s a popping in the passenger side exhaust. I put the car on a lift to check to see if anything was hitting the exhaust pities, nothing. When it’s popping the muffler is bulging out, I still feel pressure coming out the exhaust pipe, both sides seems to be the same. He says after shifting to 4th gear it goes away. Any thoughts, I’ll have him check the spark plugs on that side first. The car isn’t running hot, also starts right up. I want to see what I can to find the issue before spending money on mufflers.
    Thanks

I had bad gas that caused exhaust popping......not kidding:rolleyes:

It MAY just be the mufflers.
Awhile back I had a pop corn sound from my GS, turned out to be the Walker 17749’s were blowing out their fiberglass, looked like I had mice in my tail pipes, full of hair

Wouldn’t be the first time one of a mufflers internal baffles has rotted off on one side and is heard slapping around at the low firing rates of a motor at idle.
It will do this also above idle but the rate of noise seems to go away when in fact it’s just more constant and can blend in the the exh note being heard.

The motor could also due to a Carb issue be running rich on that side.
With a condition like this at idle fuel builds up in the muffler because the motor is not making enough exh pressure to pump it out.
The end result at around idle the heat builds up and lights off the collected fuel like a small firecracker.
Enough of this taking place and the muffler can blow out its ends, or in the starting phase of this issue just buldge out the muffler.
