Has anyone else gotten on their "list" for a set of gears?

I reached out via email back in January and was told I'd be added to their list for the summer run of gears.

Anyone have any idea if there's going to be a summer run?

    Here’s how it works:
When they have enough to justify a production run, they will do it. Not all companies operate like that, but that is how they do it with those gears. They don’t want to be out money and sitting on inventory. The other recent problem is all of the delays in manufacturing right now. They may or may not be able to get them done when expected.

    Makes sense.

Someone had a complete set-up for sale on here a couple months back. I should have grabbed it.

I gave up waiting for them to do a production run. I ended up having a complete 8.5 axle shipped to Germany in order to have a decent gear ratio and posi.

I have a '70 housing that I plan on rebuilding as a 3.64 setup. The plan is to shelve the original and use this for drag racing.

Its been years since these gears have been run.... They have sold out of every gear set of at least 3-4 runs of 30 easy. I bought many... They are shooting themselves in the foot as people are going to only wait so long. They will dump the 68-70 rear and move on. shame, as Brad and I went through a lot getting these gears produced.

???? You likely have a better idea than me.
If they show up I will buy some to have on the shelf. BUT I am not letting them hold my money till they build?? That is just weird business in my opinion.

Just thinking here (not being critical in any way) - If they had an order from you & Brian for a number off sets (you guys are probably the only ones that would order some for stock) even w/o a deposit plus the individuals like @Brett Slater that have orders in and probably would be willing to out up a deposit when they're ready to make them, maybe that'd be enough of a kick to get another run going. Idk - I've been in the specialty manufacturing business & certainly some min. quantity of committed orders is the catalyst vs. putting out the $ for labor and materials with the hope of if we make it they will sell when there are other projects w/a better prospect of getting paid more quickly.

I just got off the phone with Dave at FabCraft. Looks like it's a case of hurry up and wait.

He told me the manufacturer in Italy is held up on materials and keeps giving him the Covid excuse. He also said those of us on the list will be notified when they start production or if they decide not to move forward.

    Nonetheless, there's some info.

First I've heard of another run. Sounded like you were in the know. Thanks for the reply. As for taking money before even making parts that's what Legendary is doing now. 11 months wait they hit my card for the Full amount. They never charged before until actually Shipping your parts. Probably covid related ? but working on future margins is never a good business plan.

Well that does not sound promising. I believe they are in emergency state from covid. Thanks for the follow-up.

FabCraft has done a few batches or runs of these gears, and each time there a more of a delay or decision to do another. Now add in the materials shortage or plant closings and the wait gets longer. The gears that have made go to 3 different locations before they become a sellable product. Remove one and you’re stuck.
But even before all of that, the normal procedure was to collect deposits for the upcoming run. I did that last time and got 4 sets. Everything happened in about 6-8 months time, but now there is no telling if or when the next run will become reality.
Even Jim or myself are not going to load up on supply of these. Sure, there is demand, but when you factor in the cost and then factor that into a complete rear, there are plenty of other options that make more sense economicly. The only ones I have ever built were all for cars that were more of a resto and wanting to keep everything correct. Much like what Brett is trying to do. If you have a Skylark, just go with an 8.5” or 12-bolt Chevy and be done. I can see this next run costing $600+ for a set of gears. They weren’t far from that last time, and that was before the world went full-retard. These plants and manufacturers of similar items are getting hit with more costs to operate and it goes straight to the consumer. Just look at the chroming industry that most went up 80% January 1st. That will never go back the other way. The (quality) shops that have not yet hiked there prices,I would highly suggest getting any and all of your parts sent there and keep your quotes. I have seen some back orders and shortages in other differential parts in the last year, and sure enough, when they were available again, the price was up too. I’ve been upping my quantity numbers a little to get it all at the current price, but I don’t need to start a museum of inventory either.

DO NOT get me wrong.... I WANT THEM TO BE BUILT.... But if they are not going to use the technology to build them ...sell it to a randys or other company to have them built that will put them on the market. MY fear is the longer these do not get built the more of the rear 68 69 70 8.25 Buicks will be thrown in the garbage and then....for sure NONE will sell.
    Get my point?

    Update:

I called a couple weeks ago and they had just finished up a Pontiac batch.

The woman I spoke with was very nice, recognized my name as one on the list and told me the Buick gears would be up next.

Patience is definitely a virtue. :D
