Which side goes in first? It's definitely not symmetrical. Instructions on box say refer to oem vehicle Instructions. Oem seal was a different design

The primary sealing lip should always be facing or pointing toward the media that needs to be sealed. Sometimes seals will have a secondary lip used to keep dirt and contamination away from the bearing system and/or media being sealed.

Thanks. I see one lip and it looks square not tapered

On closer examination of second seal it looked more symmetrical so I guess it doesn't matter. Didn't look like great quality control on production of these.

It should be obvious which way the lip faces. That lip should face into the rotor towards the inner bearing.

Doesn't the spring side always go into the area it's sealing?

Yes, the open end goes down.

Most of the new wheel seal offerings are a square cut seal that is centered in the seal body and it seems as if some may be installed either way. Others have an obvious shape to the outer body. I like the older style with a lip seal. You can see all three styles on Rockauto website.

No spring on that one and no lip. I have a few of those in my toolbox

This side faces out on the rotor
