Group Purchase: Plastic Re-Chroming of Parts

Discussion in 'Group Purchases' started by Dano, Jun 12, 2024.

A few ppl are interested in having some dash bezels re-chromed (https://v8buick.com/index.php?threads/looking-for-advice.394502/) & possibly some other plastic parts re-chromed so I'm going to approach Vacuum Orna-Metal (https://www.vacuumorna-metal.com/) about a v8buick.com group purchase price. I have no idea if they'll be interested but I think we have a better chance if I can approach them w/some idea of quantity.

Also post if there's any other parts not included below that you want me to include. I'm assuming '68-72 but happy to include anything from other years but may need a picture.

This isn't a commitment per se but please post if there's anything you'd be interested in having re-chromed and the quantity.
    • '70-72 Dash Bezel (@dreeesh got a single piece price of $352)
    • '68-9 Dash Bezel
    • Radio Bezel
    • Under Column Cover
    • Armrest bases
    • Door lock knobs
    • Radio knobs
    • Radio escutcheon (behind knob)
    • Headlight switch nut/escutcheons.
    • Cigarette lighter escutcheon
    • Vent pulls (non-A/C)
Once we have pricing I can post that and then, assuming they're interested in giving us a discount, I assume we'd get some type of code or way to indicate our parts are part of this group purchase & we'd each ship our stuff to them.

I have a UPS account & could provide discounted labels to anyone who needs.

If they want everything in one shipment/payment, I can coordinate that as well.

According to their website, they can do repairs ($35/hr.) and don't require payment until the parts are completed. Al @(IDOXLR8) had his dash done there not too long ago & was pleased (& is fussy:)). Some of you may know Charlie Roy (he lurks on here but I don't believe he's a member) who also said their quality was good.

I'm afraid some of these services won't be around forever.

There's thousands of guys on here who likely need something plastic chrome redone.

If Dano is going to do the legwork, at least we could give him something to go hat-in-hand with.

Max Damage I'm working on it!

I would be interested in a 1968 dash bezel just to see how it looks?

Providing VOM is amenable to doing this, I think (possibly) making this happen for the end of the season might be a good plan?

This gives more members a chance to gather up parts that might still be on their cars (bezels, armrest bases, etc.) as the winter months approach.

    Just a thought...

I'm in no hurry. I have a stack of stuff & may get some extras done but there are some other parts I'd like to gather.

@dreeesh seemed ready to send his bezel off. Maybe they'd give us a window of time (maybe they won't be interested at all). I'll send them an initial inquiry to see if there's interest & if so, they've probably been down this road before & could provide some initial guidance.

    VET,

The company that actually does the chroming is Mueller in East Bridgewater, MA. About 15 north of me.

I reached out to them a few years ago and here's the reply:

"Please contact Mike at Instrument Specialties, Inc. They are an automotive restoration shop we are affiliated with. They will take your old parts strip them down to bare plastic, perform all necessary prep work, and then send us parts in bulk so that you get a better price.

Once the parts are returned to them they will perform all secondary operations and finish detail so when the parts are returned to you they will be completely restored. Mike will provide you with pricing and lead-time, thanks for the opportunity. Contact info below.

    Thank you.
I did read that there is an affiliation between shops that use Mueller. Apparently Mueller picks which shops do really good work on the restoration side and Mueller does the chrome work.

Sounds like they have a good setup and the workmanship is very good. Vet
