Friend was telling me, he has heard of 2-3 of them, possibly Dan Jensen owning one, a red one? Year wise i think a 70-72? Is it true, or is my friend just making up $%(^

    Thanks in advance!

In 1972 you could order what was known as the T41 front end. This got you the "GTO" hood and fenders. The T41 front end could be ordered on any Lemans or wagon. Also as a side note the GTO was no longer a model in 1972, rather it was an option on the Lemans, therefore you can't tell directly from looking at a VIN whether it is a Lemans with the GTO option or not.

I had a 1972 Lemans Wagon with the GTO scooped hood and endura nose and a 400 in the mid-1980s. I bought it from the original owner who ordered it that way. Blue with blue interior and the formula steering wheel. I sold it to someone local to Minneapolis in 1986 who was going to restore it. I was young, it was pretty solid, kind of ratty and not a Buick...

I wonder where it ended up. (yeah, I know, probably on the front of a GTO clone somewhere)

    Here is a dissenting opinion:

    THERE WAS NO SUCH BEAST!

For years, there was legend of a few wagons and one ragtop. None were ever made. If they were, PHS would have invoices for them. However, certain people and publication have perpetrated the legend that never was.

These cars were simply Lemans wagons with the T41 front end. They do not make a GTO. Most of 'em came with 350s - not a GTO engine. Ones with 400s or 455s are still not GTOs. About 125 were built in 1971, and I've never seen figures for 1972, but probably twice as many were built.

Dan's car was a real T41 car made into this phantom GTO with a 455HO - end of story!

There where 3 1972 GTO station wagons made. these where made by overzelous line workers in Framingham. just after new years in 1972.( probaly hung over   ) Dan Jensen had a clone. One showed up in Fl. but was lost again. As For the 72 GTO Convertable 1 possibly was made and sold to a dealer in the Indy for use as a pace car. this one is said to be found in Ohio. Taken from Muscle car review, July 99.

The rarest GTO production car was the 72 coupe 455HO with manual in which 3 where built.

Also the 71 GTO Judge convert was so rare even the factory didn't have a picture of one.

Hi, Tim, you're just stating the Old Wives Tale. It's not true at all. There are no invoices to prove the story.

Don't always believe invoices. Ford has no documents on my '78 Monarch at all but I know they made it and 1 other one

So what's the deal with the Monarch? They weren't available that year? And did you try Marti Auto Works?

I don't think I'm alone in saying that there's a lot of misinformation that floats around the hobby, much of it stemming from earlier years in the hobby. Gradually, over time, a lot of it has been dispelled, such as the 427 Mustangs (never built). The GTO wagons is another one. The burdon of proof is on the person who thinks they were built. If there is no proof, why should I believe it? PHS has all the invoices - don't you think, considering they have dealt with thousands of customers and have looked through hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of invoices, they'd find something on this car?
