Harmonic Balancer R&R Tool for ROMAC SFI Recommendation

    Hello folks.

I have to R&R the press-fit Romac SFI harmonic balancer on my 482” BBB, but all I have is a generic wheel puller. Rather than removing it with my puller and then renting or borrowing an installer, I want to purchase a good quality harmonic balancer remover/installer kit for this engine.

The kit must include a ¾-16 adapter and must be capable in installing the press-fit Romac balancer.

Summit.com lists (and has in stock) a few universal-type installers/removers for GM engines (not including LS/LT engines) with prices ranging from $75 for a Proform kit #66514 (that’s torque limited to 150#) to $277 for a Moroso MOR-61743 kit (for "Buick" and a number of other brands), and so on.

While I love the idea of a bargain (i.e., Proform), I’m more interested in a good quality product. Right now I'm about ready to call the Moroso tech line to verify that the "Buick" adapter in their kit is actually 3/4-16" before ordering their kit from Summit.

Before I do, any recommendations or comments?

As always, thank you in advance for your help.

My installer is front snapon......has multiple thread adapters. I think 10 or so different sizes. Does a great job at the installing of these tighter dampners like our buicks and even bbc.

My snap on puller stripped out after a few years but my cheap harbor freight unit looks the same with all the same threads is working great.

I can say for removal tool I like ones that has the blank hole in the middle torque down screw.....mine has this and has about 4 different length steel rods to bottom out in thread hole of the crank to keep the removal tool from messing up the crank snout/threads

Can't hone it out ? Buick didn't see the need to press fit

Which is one of the great pitfalls of our BBB's design for performance usage. But when your engine peaks at 4600 rpm, harmonics are usually not a problem. Which is why the factory did what they did.

So if your building a 270HP smogger, go ahead and don't bother with a dampener that actually works just throw that sloppy stock one back on.

I see more rpm related issues with factory or reproduction factory balancers.. so much so that about 10 years ago, I switched the entire stroker performance lineup to an SFI balancer, and every one of those is press fit. Without being press fit, it's effectiveness is compromised.
