thank you in advance if anyone can help me I have a 70-gs-455 with rust in the bottom corners of rear window and filler panel...and bottom of both fenders I have found the filler panel and fender patches..just can’t find the window metal/channel and right side quarter panel has a deep dent .. I see the wheel house on both sides has been eaten a little also do you think I should remove both quarters to do it rite the first time ? Or save all I can and patch it up carefully... I’m not a body man a will have to find one I’m in West Palm Bch fla .. on the upside Trishield performance is building a stout BBB to power this GS ... please chime in I need all the advice I can get
Those are very small places, my suggestion, especially since you have limited skill set with body work is the following 1. Sandblast area with handheld blaster. 2. Spray with an epoxy primer, it's avaliable in spray cans now with an activator. Or if you want to use a gun or have one ppg, DP primer or equivalent 3. 3m 8115 epoxy , two part Urethane panel bonding adhesive. Apply tape over the back side if the holes. Push the 8115 into the pits real good and build it over the area. Then sand with 80 then 120/180 Then prime The holes at the top of the roof may be inaccessible from the inside, can't remember. If not no bigger than they are you can pack them with Duraglass and then cap with the 8115 or just the Duraglass will be fine. Cutting out and welding in maybe technically the "correct" way but with clean metal, epoxy and 8115 it simply isn't needed...on small areas line pictured. What I've described is less intrusive is a 100% acceptable repair process. Old timers will disagree because they didn't have the product we do now and don't understand how to use them. Always try to coat the backside of any rust repair with an encapsulator of some sort. The dent, yea it's pretty gnarly but nowhere near bad enough to warrant replacement. If someone says it can't or they can't fix it and needs to be replaced,..move on if they can't repair that, then they certainly can't I install a new Tabco 1/4 panel skin. Rust behind the tire, if that's the worst place a simple piece of sheet metal is all that's needed there, once again don't go cutting panels off for trivial areas like those
Rear lower window channel area, extending from the package tray to the trunk opening is available one piece new. This extended across the rear deck seam to seam. Not a terrible job & worth the effort when I had my '71. Recently saw individual window channel sections available new. We had to cut & bend new small sections to replace the rust.
Thank you hugger for the advise I will follow it... Here are some more photos I guess this should be a build tread ... Because I’m gonna try to fix everything can on the car and keep it for long term is seems it’s the factory paint on the car as far as I can tell need all the advice I can get please I want to paint the car the factory color it would be worth the most money if I ever have sell it I have all the original parts that where changed out some one put on disc brakes and tilt wheel and all the factory power windows harness are laying in side the doors thou it has crank windows it’s seem to be a early production gs it also has low options (striper model) the call outs only say Buick motor division under the GS on front fenders and rear sway bar is strangely installed rear control are not boxed ?
I made my own patch piece for window channel I used harbor freight shrinker and stretcher to make rear window lower left corner it took some time to get it right but turned out ok
https://www.facebook.com/beldenspeed/ Check these guys out. They make all kinds of window channels and specific Buick pieces
I have a vinyl top car and the channel around windshield is in similar condition up past leading edge. I finally decided a roof panel would be the best solution. It would fix the top channel of both windows. The filler panel to trunk fixes the lower. From there some piece work to finish out. It sounds extreme but allows a full repair
Rust and more rust ... please can any suggestions on the best way to win this battle thanks to all of you guys for all the great advice
Starting to get a little more work in ... how much would it hurt resale price if I paint my Gs white instead of the factory brown opinions please..
