Some consider the Rambler Rebel with 327/4bbl was one of the first musclecars. Looking at that Coral and Grey Nash makes that somehow hard to believe.

Apparently, the demise of every AMC product is to mounted upon a 4x4 chassis of some sort.

Rich, anytime you're ready to mud bog your AMX let me know. I can sell you my Jeep Cherokee (the wheelbase looks about right) so you can mount your AMX's body and interior on my Jeep's frame. You'll be the envy of everyone at every truck and tractor pull. :bla:

You know what, I like that idea so much I'll just convert my GTS over to 4 wheel drive instead!

Will this still be PSMCDR legal??

That black '62 4X4 Impala might have looked pretty goofy but at least us Chevy guys know enough to keep the air cleaner UNDER the hood.
This is "Pure Stock" after all for gosh sakes..... right?!
Man you AMC guys.... you can dress 'em up, but you just can't taken 'em out!!:bla:

Ah....Danny Murray's AMX. Formerly known as "Lady Willpower" and a regular at Detroit Dragway in the early 70's. Danny picked up a set of used funny car slicks and was determined to mount them on his yellow AMX in the late 70's. This was before the day of "back halfing" and "Pro Street". This was in the "jack 'em up" era. You should have seen the drive shaft with multiple CV joints!:puzzled:
I saw this AMX on Woodward last year and he has brought it back to earth. But he still has those power line pylons as ladder bars, and the air cleaners thru the scoop are gone too.
We all used to belong to a local car club called Street Machines Inc. (I had a 1975 Nova SS with metalflake and flames paint job-this WAS the 70's remember) and at one point there seemed to be a contest as to who could get the tallest intake system.
WOW! That just took me back!:eek2: :eek2:

Jody- Thanks for noticing the unique induction set up! I was wondering if anyone would get past the rest of it,to notice. Yikes!!!

Thomas- True story. Back around 1980 or so,my pimpley friends and I were just getting our drivers licenses, and set about cruising the streets of Chicago's north side.
We'd look for anything that we considered cool cruising, which beleive it or not,was already getting pretty thin in these parts,as the midwestern rust had already claimed many a car.

One day we saw, what is to this day,the greatest bastardization of any car I've seen since. Too bad there were no camera phones back then,as I know that you would agree with me.I'd only seen it twice ,and each time it was going in a direction where we couldn't spin around to get more of a good look ,but here goes....

Red 1967 Chevelle SS 396 with the following custom features.Rear spoiler made of wood,so big that it would make a Superbird blush. Dually rear axle with dually wheels and whitewall tires sticking out past each side at least 8". Wheel well flares extending out to cover the tires on each side,so large, that each had a matching mini spoiler mounted on it horizontally that matched the one on the trunk. Front had similar wheel well flares if memory serves.

Wire wheel hubcaps with red reflectors in the center ,and 18" curb feelers all around.

The front and rear bumper were nicely chromed structural U beams.

Dual exhaust was very visible from the rear ,and to this day I swear it was 4" cast iron soil pipe, and exited right behind the rear dually tires.

The hood believe it or not,was a stock 67 SS hood, and I don't think that it was messed with.

Now I know that I'm leaving a lot out here, but I think you get the flavor of this beast.

Now that's what I remember, from the brief encounters with it,but the most astonishing thing to me ,even back then, was that all the workmanship seemed excellent. It would have been easy to dismiss this thing,as just another garage bong creation, but the quality of what I saw ,however ridiculous the car was,was great.

And the little white haired white guy driving the car ,was as proud as a peacock, because in his mind,he had and was the sh-- !

    Frank,

I was typing my last replies when you were typing the above, but this car brings me back as well, and I was getting ready to relay my expirience with it,so your timing is right on.

I'm not from the Detroit area or Michigan for that matter, but I do frequent your great state.

I met my now wife Nancy, back in 1990. She's from Bloomfield Hills Mi.. I've spent a lot of time in Michigan visiting, and can honestly say that it's home to some of the coolest people I've ever met. It's my home away from home.

Anyhow, because of my Detroit area family connection,I've been going to the Woodward Ave Dreamcruise since it's second year ,when it wasn't so crowded, but still was a sight to behold. A friend of mine learned of it in a car magazine, and we were in. I went with my wife and two car guy friends that year. Both of my friends were Chevy guys ,and each had beautiful examples (67 Marina Blue 327 4spd Malibu ,and the other was a 67 SS Nova Cream color ,Black vinyl roof and and guts, 327 4spd with air)both California cars. At that time,I was driving a 72 Wild Plum 401 4spd Javelin /AMX. I was definately the oddball in my crowd (still odd),being the sole AMC guy in the crowd. As large as the WWDC is ,AMC's of any variant, were in short supply.

My friends and I were cruising in our cars the Saturday of the DC .At that time,it was still very cruisable. In this sea of GM's,Mopars and Fords,at that point I had yet to any AMC's. My buddies were ribbing me about this, when all of a sudden I hear somebody screaming "Hey Javelin" at me from across a parking lot. Finally some AMC brotheren! I swing my head in the direction of the sound, and I see the Yellow Ladder barred up Javelin /AMX (pictured) sitting there:eek2: . Were all still cruising at this point with the windows down, and my buddies are roaring with laughter. Mortified ,I give the guy a quick wave and :3gears: outta there.

Years later,I saw the car on the web,and saved the picture that you see here.

I am crying from laughing so hard and my sides hurt too! Boy, we all have been there haven't we, and seen some just amazing stuff over the years. Thanks for the day brightener, I owe you one my friend :TU:

    Thomas,

All right. Enough said! I'll put down the mike now.

Truth be told,I'm hoping that someone else, who grew up on the NW side of Chicago reads this, and confirms my sighting.

I do know what I saw,but sometimes when you reminise, you start thinking that there's no way.But again,I know what I saw,and although I've got a pretty good imagination , even Stephen King couldn't dream up that abomination!

It was nice when I found that picture on the internet of the straight axled, ladder barred from hell yellow Javelin/AMX.Oddly enough,it added a little sanity back into my life. Maybe I wasn't so crazy after all? Maybe?
