What he is saying is that at warm idle, it reads 12.6.

Yeah, that's no bueno. That wasn't apparent from the pictures.

What is it just off idle warmed up?

    12.69.

    Basically running off the battery.

The reason GM went to the internally regulated alternators like the 10 and 12SI is that they put out triple the amperage at idle. I'm guessing you want original? Those alternators have limitations.

Brett - at what RPM does it go past 13 volts?

Every car i have with the old generator and external regulator barely charges at an idle.. if it's putting 14.5 out on a rev you should have zero issues at 4500 and above. You can verify that voltage at 4500 real easy..

I had very similar problem and switched to cheap Chinese voltage regulator $29 and problem solved, did this to two cars as the same time after going thru 3 American made Regulators st $79 each

That was the point of my question above (hence why the lights dim @ idle) - At what RPM does the voltage go up. Maybe they're not supposed to dim & maybe when new these cars did charge higher at idle. Will have to look @ a shop manual @ some point & see if it says. Could certainly be a voltage regulator issue.

Probably around 1,100 ish or so.

I have the voltage regulator that came with the car, which I know works. That may be my next move as I just had that and the alternator in question tested.

    Both tested fine.

You should be a 13.1 at idle and also you can use your correct cover over the cheap new VR so it looks correct!

Cleaned up the firewall mounting area and the mounting areas on the original voltage regulator. Viola!

Subsequent test ride felt good and seemed devoid of breaking up at WOT.

I still need to tweak some more and put a timing light on it but at least the charging issue is resolved.

Whoda thought a 51 year old part would fix this?

Nice, at least that issue was easy to fix

I should also note that my factory tach is off by about 250-300 RPM (low) according to my new multimeter.

I guess it might be time to have Scott Moody rebuild it and also get myself an accurate one.

It pulled hard during the test run, so I'll take it at this point.

I'll know more once I get the timing light on it and do a couple other small things.

I think I'm almost out of the woods.

I’m glad I pointed to the VR as the culprit, these gremlins can be exhausting to say the least.
I wasn’t meaning to sound arrogant, just wanted to help solve your issue……
