I took a chance and bought a set of the newer style mirrors with the studs instead of brackets and a hold-down screw. I can make a gasket that will allow them to fit on 70-72 GS/Skylark doors and have the correct angle. The biggest difference will be you have to mount them from inside AND they have a cleaner, no holes look to them. If the regular bullet mirrors are getting too scarce or you want to do something different, I can get this going. I'm thinking of putting this set on my car as a proof of concept. They definitely won't be for the purist but I think I really want the "Objects in mirror are closer than they appear" mirror as I get older. The current right mirror is not much use backing into the garage.
This is a good ideal for the guys that like the sport mirror look but not wanting the original piece. I got customers that wouldn’t mind. So if you build some I’d buy
You may run into the issue of multiple different angled bases with the stud type mounting. I think there are a ton of variations, even more than the bracket style like the originals on our cars.
I have the chrome mirrors back on my car. Now that they are reproduced, anyone can get them. When I bought my car in 1999, the PO had the Sport Mirrors. I found the right side mirror nearly useless. I found the later sport mirror convex glass and swapped it out. The difference was night and day. The convex mirror gives you a much wider view, yes, objects are closer than they appear, but the use ability of the mirror is way more important to me than originality. When the chrome right side mirror got reproduced, I bought one. I already had a very good left mirror, so I went back to the chrome mirrors. I like them better, but the right side mirror use ability was reduced. I was able to find a convex mirror glass from a later model Buick that was almost the right size, just a bit smaller, but the same shape. I stuck it on to the existing glass. Again, the view is much improved. You can see the entire lane next to you while driving
Potentially. The set I have use the same angle but the holes are in different locations. Same as the other gaskets, 3D printed in ABS. The only change for the set I have is to the location of the holes. Yep, that's what I was going for. I swapped the whole head of the mirror onto my old style base. It is able to bolt together and if I don't point it out, I doubt anyone would notice other than the convex mirror and printing on the glass. At least, now the mirror is more useful for backing into the garage.
Actually you may want to look into making gaskets for the Buick Apollo, X-body cars. P/N 9877665 unless the Nova guys have a good source. It’s a pretty unique gasket.
