I wonder why they don't make a neoprene type gasket? Also, has anyone posted a thread about doing the rear main seal while the engine is in the car?

I tried it on a 460 in a old F350 and ended up pulling the engine. It leaked worse after the first attempt. While it was out and upside down I dropped in all new bearings and re sealed up the rest of the engine.

Try one of these, or a long screwdriver held to your ear. You should be able to get close enough to where the sound is coming from before pulling anything apart... Inexpensive but can be effective.

I recently swapped oil pan on my 68 Wildcat with center sump…. It was a pain in the arse. Remove center link, etc. drop exhaust, loosen fan shroud, pop trans cooler lines loose from clip on frame. I also had to remove the starter to get better access to some of the bolts. unbolt mounts and I used two bottle jacks and jacked up the trans and engine - by the flywheel using the front edge of trans. I was worried about the front seal being stressed if I used the balancer. I used gray RTV to glue the cork gasket and rear rubber seal to the pan and let that set overnight so it wouldn’t move during assembly. Before I assembled I put a very thin skim of RTV on the block (just a tad) to seal it on both sides of gasket. Be attentive during reassembly that the rear rubber seal properly sits in the grove in the block. Then put all the other crap back together and hope it doesn’t leak! FYI the fel pro gasket was just $12 on Amazon… a good deal.
