I'm thinking of going to Vegas this winter. The last time i was there was 17 years ago and i didn't really leave the strip. I would like to go to the grand canyon and Hoover dam. Canyon tours offer so many options i'm not sure what to do. Bus tours, air plane or helicopter. Any input or ideas would be great.

    Thanks

I stayed for a week at the Motel 6, cheap, clean and at walking distance from the Las Vegas Boulevard.

    Motel 6 Las Vegas, NV.
    Tropicana, 195 E Tropicana Ave.

I brought my own car from Canada.
Best thing is to rent a car to visit the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon if you fly in.

There’s so much more to Vegas than casinos, definitely drive around, see stuff, the junkyards are/were awesome!

The last time I was in Las Vegas was 1968. I have never gone back. I won $600 in the Golden Nugget, and decided to quit while I was ahead.

Once there was the Riviera casino in Las Vegas, where they introduced the 1963 Riviera.

We took the helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon and would do it again at any price. Flew over the glass floor observation deck thingy they rave about, not interested. Wife and I sat right next to the pilot and what an experience. Coming back to the airport we flew parallel to The Strip about 1 block off center, WOW. Was the Champagne & Chocolate tour but WOW just WOW.
Stayed on the upper floor of the Mirage using the private elevators, darn nice too but now it's gone.
Oh and flew right over the Hoover Dam, what at amazing perspective.

Been over 30 years since I stayed there. Rented a car and went to Death Valley for the day. Dante's View overlooking the valley is quite breathtaking.
Would have gone to Hoover Dam if one of my buddies wasn't so addicted to the slots. :D (RIP Wes)

Truck broke down near the NASCAR track there pulling the Reynolds car (enclosed trailer) on our way back from visiting Reynolds dealership for their 95’th anniversary. It was a very bad side of town even though it was at a Holiday Inn.
Literally had my Beretta laid out while changing the radiator on my tow vehicle.
Thank God I didn’t have to use it while a shady guy approached asking a bunch of questions…
Hotel even warned me not to go out after sunset!

You can take a tour inside the Hoover Dam.

    Guided Hoover Dam Tours

Hoover Dam offers two options for tours.
Walk through original construction tunnels and take in massive generators on the 30-minute Guided Power Plant Tour.
For an hour-long excursion, opt for the Guided Dam Tour, which includes the power plant sights plus riding to the top of Hoover Dam
in an original elevator and seeing the Colorado River through a ventilation shaft.

Tickets for the Guided Dam Tour are $30 and can only be purchased on site.
Guided Power Plant Tour tickets are $15 and bookable online.

If you’re short on time, skip the Hoover Dam tour and walk across the top of the dam for free.
You’ll enjoy sweeping vistas along with vertigo-inducing views of the Colorado River and Lake Mead.

    Tours Inside Hoover Dam

Each tour at the Hoover Dam Visitor Center includes a behind-the-curtain peek at the inner workings of Hoover Dam,
its powerful hydroelectric power operations, and the rich history of its construction.
Tours are limited to groups of 20 to ensure everyone has an opportunity to learn and ask questions about Hoover Dam.

And if you ever wondered about the name:

Classic/exotic car rental is readily available there. The wife and I were there 10 years ago. The place had a 69 GTO available for a rental. I called to reserve it but they told me a celebrity had it for the whole month. They wouldn't say who. We settled on a brand new camaro.

At the time that I visited Las Vegas, I also took a looksee at the Hoover Dam. At that time the road ran across the top of the dam. Sometime after that, it was decided that having cars and trucks directly on the dam was not such a good idea, and a separate bridge was constructed.

It took some of the fun of visiting the dam away, but in this crazy world, it was probably a good decision

Last time I was there you could still go out on the Dam, there is a lot to see around Vegas and southern Nevada and Death Valley in California!

I love helicopters. I'd definitely do this if I were to go there again. I've done a bus tour to Hoover dam, which I also recommend to get into the dam if that interests you. But I wouldn't spend the time in a bus going to the Grand Canyon. Maybe because I've been there a couple of times with family in AZ. But I'd still love to see it from a helicopter. I have done a nighttime strip helicopter tour. It was around 15 minutes of flight time with some sparkling wine, pick up at the hotel and drop off. It was really cool.

I also recommend checking out the neon graveyard - where the old signs from the past are stored and restored.
