I know I can weld up the advance mechanism on my stock HEI distributor but since there were non-advance HEI distributors made for TBI GM engines, I thought maybe a conversion of one of those would be possible using the drive gear from the Buick. Has anyone done this? If so, what are the "gotchas"?

There is a very easy way to lock out the mechanical advance of an HEI, and it is reversible. Take the weights and springs off. Then fashion a metal plate that fits under the rotor. Move the advance plate to full advance and drill 4 holes in your plate to match the the 4 pins. At full advance, the pins all line up. Slip the plate over the pins. That locks out the mechanical advance. You can make it out of cardboard first, then transfer it to metal. V8 member TheSilverBuick has a picture somewhere, can't seem to find it.

They even have them on Amazon,

You're welcome. I actually used this same method to lock out my points distributor.

That's exactly how the turbo folks show it in post #10 of the link I gave you.
