Looking at "survivor" 71 gs 455 Convertible - questions about over spray and trunk under side....

A few body shots - not sure resolution will show my findings - just rust dots - looked behind from trunk and didn't see any bigger problems hiding - very isolated rust. Body lines are....ok. IMG_2552.jpg

Next time u go back bring a good magnet check the car over and all lower panels for bondo if you see rust at the lower windshield i would ask the seller if you can take wipers off and trim that is a hard place to repair Same with floors peel the rugs back quick and check the floors so you have no surprises Good luck looks like a nice car.

Great idea- i did have a magnet and everything was great except for the passenger lower fender dog leg - area just under the trim line - it had bondo checking and lighter magnet pull. Rest of car had a strong magnet hold. My review of the car was rushed yet I think I hit the major areas - the ones that I always found after the fact.

The stamping in your picture looks 100% factory if it matches the vin to your car it's the original motor. I'm going to post a picture where to find the Vin number on the transmission case on the driver side right past the linkage coming out of the case above the pan. The car from the pictures looks like it has a lot of potential I wouldn't get scared off by the interior The interior is a lot easier to replace than body and paint you have to remember the car is just about 50 years old. It's a shame he didn't stored in the garage. I can't imagine paying 28K for a car and have it sit outside in some half ass garage . IMG_4411.JPG

Believe it or not he paid $38k in '07 and originally wanted $28k from me. No idea if he is willing to drop his price in half yet he hasn't told me to take a hike yet.
Thanks again for all the assistance - saves me a ton of research.

Damn 38K that thing must've been pretty mint at the time until he parked in his so call garage.

Prices were high in ‘07; the housing market was booming on Ninja loans and people were pulling their equity out and buying toys. It was a bad time to buy if you weren’t flipping. During that time cars would sell high at auction and then show up right afterward at a dealer who was asking even more but would finance them. After the bubble burst I saw a lot of toys (especially Harleys) for sale, but early on the asking prices were still high because the owners owed all the money on them. Sounds like he bought it at the wrong time.

I'm pretty sure the $38k price didn't phase him at all - he's obviously doing really well, is a solid guy and saw something he wanted. Heck - if I had a ton of money floating in my bank account I'd probably make some questionable purchases. He definitely over paid for the GS yet looking at his new replacement car I'm pretty the he paid six digits for it (gorgeous Porsche). I'm happy to take his left overs :)

You're right about the '07 housing market - it was going up like crazy and within months of imploding.

Update - I talked to the seller today and he seems to be stuck at the $25k price so we gracefully parted ways. I mentioned that my price would be at $14k and he wasn't mad yet definitely wasnt ready to go there. He will probably put it back in the shed and let her sit - all those tiny rust spots will grow and the interior will start growing mushrooms. Hopefully he calls back some time soon.
Gentlemen - thanks for all the help. I will now direct my cash and time to my '68 442 Convertible.

Hey you tried, 25K good luck with that. Your talking 20 K just to do a frame on repaint correctly.

Unfortunately, some less thorough buyers that don't do the right kind of research will probably pay $20K+ for that car. Just a feeling I have.

Yeah some knuckle head might be tempted to pay his price yet the once they open the doors and get hit by the mildew stink - they'll run away.
I'm very happy walking away unless the price makes sense.
Stay healthy Gentlemen and spend this winter on your car!
