I agree, I would not spend the money on new heads unless yours are not useable. My plan is very close to yours.

    73 block and heads
I plan on doing all the block and oiling mods as you mentioned.
I will either hot tank and hone the block or if I want to spend a little more shave the deck.
Used high compression factory pistons for 10:1 compression if I deck the block
Used edelebrock B4B but any aluminum intake is good
    Stock rods and crank
Used KB Mark 2 cam (a little more than a 212)
    New rings bearings and gaskets
    New lifters, push rods
    Used 67 430 rockers
Stock valve covers but I found some new aluminum ones for cheap.
Stock exhaust manifolds unless I can find or modify headers.
    TA oil pump booster plate.

I plan on tearing the motor down myself. I will check the ports and open up anything that needs it and do the final assembly.

This will be for a occasional driver car. If you drive your car a lot you may sonic check the block and bore it for new pistons and get a new cam. But I am doing it on a low buck or compaired to tv a penny's budget.

3.42 posi. Since the car isn't a GS I'm guessing somebody swapped it in at some point.

Let me know how that build ends up turning out.

Indeed, you are very lucky with that rear end. A new engine will fire that thing up for sure. :D

I am still collecting parts and have other hobbies so it may be a while.

It was a very pleasant surprise when I went to get the car. Previous owner only had the car a few months and didn't know about it. He hit a slick spot in his yard when he was pulling it out for me and I saw the driver side tire spin. Crawled under the car and sure enough, it was a 3.42 posi. Good thing I had the price locked in already because I could tell he wanted to ask for more when we discovered it.

Jerrit, good thing he honoured his word/price and didn't say "no deal I want more money". To me a deal is never truly done until the cash and title change hands. While you're working on your car work on your poker face and excitement containment methods too for future purchases lol:p:D

So after 2 years of researching and slowly accumulating parts, I'm finally getting this engine rebuilt. The block is at the machine shop. The parts list got longer and more expensive, but I think it'll come out a lot better. Thanks to a lot of guys on here for some good info and recommendations and putting up with a lot of "beginner" questions.

    So I decided to go:

.038 over and get the TA forged 20cc dish pistons with 2.00 compression height
    Rebuilt Stage 1 heads
    TA 284-88H Cam
    Calculated compression is 9.99:1
    Eddy Performer intake
    Everyday Performance Quadrajet
    Double roller timing set
TA timing cover with assembled oil pump setup

I think this setup will wake the boattail up and sets the bottom end up for a set of aluminum heads if I ever decide I need to go that route.

Just for comparison purposes - my 462 is running the 23 cc SpeedPros about .007-.008 in the hole for 10:1, unported 71 CC Stage heads. A 218/230/110 cam installed straight up, EP Q-Jet - Made 400 on manifolds, 415 on ported manifolds and 430 on headers, runs 12.4's @106 in a 4000 lb car. You've got the makings of a stout street motor with that combo..

Thanks for posting this. I'm skipping the dyno because it's not in the budget so it's good to have something to compare it to that gives me a ballpark what kind of numbers it should put up. It's going to have stock manifolds on it for now.

It's got a stock 70 Intake with the plenum opened up, and running the ported manifolds right now.

As Larry said “ lucky you”
    That’s much better than a stock 2.56:D:D
