Don’t plan the funeral yet; pull the valve covers and start wiggling things around.

Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. In hindsight, I probably didn't need a full rebuild either. Definitely dig in a little a see what's up. If you have a bad lifter or two, you can probably get away with a lifter and cam swap.

You didn't scare me at all, lol. I'm just preparing for the worst case scenario. I knew going into a 59 year old car that this could happen. The sound it's making is terrible though, but hopefully it's valvetrain or timing chain.

When you pointed/aimed the camera at the r/front of the engine the noise seemed to get louder. My guess would be fuel pump. Fairly cheap & easy to replace.
    just my thoughts.

@telriv , I know you're excellent with these engines, and man do I hope you're right! I just replaced the fuel pump last June, but crazier things have happened, lol. How would one go about telling if the fuel pump is the cluprit?

Thank you again for all of your help!

I got the oil pressure gauge, and just finished installing the engine side line in. Will wire it up tomorrow morning, and hopefully will have good news on oil pressure. I've read that at fire up these nailheads should be around 40psi and then once warm 17-25??

    Thanks again!

    Well.......

Definitely not the fuel pump. Just finished swapping it out and the noise is still there and the same as before. I have good oil pressure, so tomorrow will be pulling plugs and rotating crank by hand, watching the rockers. Will update tomorrow.

    Thank you!

Are you sure the fuel pump lever is not hitting timing chain?
Look closely at the one you pulled off and see if there is any witness marks on it indicating interferance fit.

(If you have not already looked and ruled that out)

I am not sure what to look for, but this is the one I just pulled.

If you don't see anything weird visually when you crank engine over, pull the rocker shafts and check the level of the valves. Please. Just humor me:D

@Smartin my apologies sir. I have the valve covers off already, so why not! After all, I know next to nothing about these engines. I will do this tomorrow and take photos!

    Thanks;

The wear areas in yellow (if those are just "burnished" and no depth) might be OK.
The circled red are a bit concerning and overall wear could be excessive if the pump was only in a short time.

But hard to tell from a picture. Maybe a couple shots at an angle.

About how many miles on this one?

Press on with other folks requests for info, (but I would not rule out the pump eccentric cam being worn or damaged)

That unit was in for 3k miles only. There is no depth to the marks.

I ordered new gearset and timing chain from TA tonight. Will be here next week. For the cost it's cheap insurance. Tomorrow will pull rocker shafts.

i would run it with no fan or power steering pump belts just to make sure.. maybe a bent push rod.

That's a great looking car, I hope you get it sorted out.

I would remove one valve cover at a time and run it to try to find the location of the noise. A garden hose to the ear would help.

All- I apologize for not updating. I decided to give the 'ol girl a rest, and my mind/sanity as well.

I am not inexperienced with working on cars, but internal engine work isn't something I've done a ton of, and I just don't want to screw something up, lol.

    I'm going to resume Monday.

    Everyone have a great weekend!
