Welcome to the 340 Blues!!....nothing else will work and nothing else is made to replace it with....if you have a 2bl intake then you may find a 4bl but it will have to be a stock Buick piece...no aftermarket hi-po stuff ....... you can get some headers from TA and a camshaft, Iski also but no intakes....I have a 340 myself, very nice small block! :TU:

    340 Intake manifolds

As stated above unfortunately there are no aftermarket intake manifolds for this motor. There are factory 4 barrel manifolds available and except for their heay weight from being made out of steel are a really good factory piece of equipment. If you don't have a 4 barrel manifold I have a couple of spares and I'd be willing to sell one. As far as the carb goes you can either find an original Carter, part no. 1379945 or use a Edelbrock 625cfm carb. If you use the Edelbrock carb you will need to cut off the tab for the dashpot off of your original carb and weld it into the correct location on the new one. If you need a picture of this let me know. I've done this conversion a number of times without any problems. You'll need to also block off your original heat choke tube on the passenger side manifold if it has rusted through inside of the exhaust manifold. I prefer to use the electric choke model. I have these parts if you need them and would be willing to ship them to you. I specialize in the 300 and 340 motors. If you need any help just let me know. I carry a full line of both new and used parts for this motor.
To me the 340 is probably the best and most underestimated Buick motor out there. :3gears:

I would also recommend the Edelbrock Performer 1406 carb, as it is very reliable.

A K&N air filter would also raise horsepower.

Other horsepower mods would be the Poston's cam and headers, which are talked about alot on this forum. Dual exhausts also help. Also, a modern ignition system. I have an all-MSD ignition (dist/coil/6A/wiring) , and have been very pleased with it.

Do you have the MSD part numbers for the ignition parts you used?

  6. sorry, its a 340-4 barrel and thanks for answers

i forgot thats a 4 barrel carb!! wuwu, bluewhale and yellowlark, thank you all for the informations. the info about the "tab and dashpot" and also about the choke is difficult to unterstand or translate for me - so i work on it with my english dictionary :eek2: but about the TA or Postons headers and cam,
can you name me a dealer?

Greetings from the old father rhine

We're here to help each other and glad to do it! :TU: I'm not sure what y'all call a "choke" but its when you first start you car up in the morning when its cold and the engine idles faster then it would when its warmed up....we call that "to choke", the top flap in your carb closes and "chokes the air off and feeds the engine raw fuel....someone may explain this better than me but that might help you to figure it out.....I know how this is, what y'all call a "bonnet", we call a hood and so on, as long as we're talking cars, its all good! Try this place for the parts we spoke about and good luck, stay in touch!

Hi guys, I agree with the above! A few bolt ons is all you need to make the 340 scream. Mine turned 173,000 miles this weekend! Very strong motors and lots of torque. The Carter and Edlebrock (same design) is they way to go on the carb, easy to tune, reliable and they don't leak like those Holleys. Best of Luck! Mark

Question for the 340 guys, what kind of oil preasure y'all showing?....mine seams low.

Mine would run 12 at idle, 23 at 3000 rpm, using 10w-30 oil.

Last month, I bought the $20 TA Performance adjustable oil pressure device and also switched to 20w-50 oil. Now I have 26 at idle and 45 at 3000 rpm.

That was using the factory setting on the oil pressure device. Could probably play with it and go back to thinner oil, but I'm happy with the current results.

See, mine shows that low also and I was worried about it, wonder why its so low? I running 10-30 also. So is using that device a good idea you think?

Hi, I Have a Poston high volume pump and runs at around 40 when warmed up at 1500 rpm. It is around 50 when first started and warming up, 10-40 oil. The Buick chassis sevice manual indicates that 40 lbs @ 2400 RPM is normal. Best regards, Mark

One issue that I found while reading my 1966 Buick Chassis Service Manual is that the oil pressure relief valve is designed to not allow the oil pressure to exceed 30 psi, hot or cold.

That 30 psi cutoff is exactly what was happening with my 340 until I recently bought the TA product : http://www.taperformance.com/oilling.htm

Perhaps there was a change for 1967, as Mark's manual quotes a higher normal pressure than mine.

    Oil Pressure

One of the main things to look for when suffering from low oil pressure is grooves inside the front cover housing. Over time this area will become scored and cause a drop in oil pressure and cause cavitation within the system. The best cure for this is to rebuild the oil pump assembly and use a steel thrust plate for the pump gears to ride on. If the housing itself is badly scored it will need to be replaced. If you can find a rebuild kit let me know. I carry them in stock and they include the thrust plate, gears, gaskets, and 3 different pressure springs for the oil pump relief valve. I also have both good used front covers and new ones in stock. Or if you just need the part numbers I can provide you with those.

There are some options for the 340 guys as far as manifolds go, but they are off the beaten path, and won't be the typical 4bbl type manifold. JE Developments
    http://www.beestore.co.uk/johneales/catalog.html
(on page two of new parts) sells two piece weber downdraft (IDA) and sidedraft (DCOE) manifolds for high performance Rovers (exactly the same intake port pattern as a 340). It's a two peice manifold so it doesn't matter what the deck hieght is, 340, 300, 215/rover, etc. Sure it's more money than you paid for the car, but an individual runner system topped with 4x48IDAs would be the ultimate screamer.
If you've got more money than you know what to do with you could buy four TWM IDA pattern throttlebodies and do an IR fuel injection setup.

Well... don't forget the Australian Wilpower P76 single plane intake with a couple of 1/4" adapter plates... Needs a bit of porting out to work though.

Contact Chris Dale at p76v8@yahoo.com . Tell him what you want. I should point out that the intake comes with 215 sized ports. You can port it out to within 80% of the 340 size.
