Put a Jack under my 71 for the first time today and was looking under the car. Made a crazy discovery. Picture tells the story. All I can say is WTF?? Anyone ever seen this type of Hack work before?
Yep, easiest way to get to the blower. My 71 has it cut out too. They only cut 3 sides and 'folded' it down to take it out and 'folded' it back so the gaping hole is not there.
I can see why people would do that, though I've taken the time to remove the sheet metal. I think garages tend to cut more than home mechanics.
I remember my pop telling me they did that at the dealerships, I think but not sure that it might have even been sanctioned by the factory in the service manual with some models of cars.
Cutting the hole was the recommended repair procedure by GM. They used to have templates and patch panels available for this. I think I remember some of the better aftermarket blower motors also coming with patch panels, way back when.
Yup, did that on my old GS years ago. But we kept the hole, tack welded & sealed it back up nice & clean. D.
Yup, the service manual has a diagram of how and where to cut. Imagine all those nice new r/s inner fenders they probably cut at the dealership!
Its amazing what service procedures they could get away with back then ...I am sure many of you have heard of the walnut shells placed in the cylinders via the spark plug hole then blasted around with compressed air to remove built up carbon in the cylinders.....today that would be considered absurd.
Worse than that is putting baking soda down the carb while engine is running to help seat the rings .
I'm sure Comet would have worked too , but I do know for a fact that baking soda worked , but that was on a Chevy .
