What is a good over the counter product that I can use? They came black from hooker. Does the factory paint need stripped first?
I’m not sure if there is one. If there is Eastwood probably has it. Mostly you need to send them off or find a place locally. Check online.
I got a killer deal on the super comp Hooker Headers. bought them off eBay as a scratch and dent item for $300. Bought directly from Holly's eBay account. As far as I can tell there's absolutely nothing wrong with them.
You can google "jet hot coating" or ceramic coating in your area. I have a feeling it might cost the same as you paid for the headers so it may not be worth it. it really depends on the local shop and thier pricing. If you have to ship them out to be coated then I would not bother to be honest.
I would wire wheel and use POR-15 (brush on) to paint the engine bay and frame. Top it off with spray paint for a nice look. It is a super durable paint that sticks directly to rust and encapsulates it. Or for lower budget efforts use Rustolium paint applied with a brush, then spray paint over.
The jet Hot or coating will keep them cooler unfortunately it probably cost I bet 3-500 bucks now I was playing with a heat gun on my headers a while back and I noticed at each spot where the coating had come off there was some rust starting to form there and the heat in that area was 50* hotter in those areas on the headers. mine are just about 27 years old now so they have worn some lol but the point is they keep the under hood temps down and will dissipate heat a lot faster than with out. If you can swing it this will be worth it and will last well over 20 years. They do this on the inside and out.
I've heard of por15. It is amazing. But I have so little rust I don't think its necessary. I did buy some rust reformer spray paint for the few areas where its needed.
after multiple cans of brake cleaner and degreaser I'm finally seeing original paint. Anyone know what the "4" means under 350?
If you are at this point with the motor I would get the oil holes drilled out. Either you do it with the kits available or get a shop to do it for you. This will be the Best money spent on the motor whether you leave it stock or not. Don't hesitate on this just do it. I remember my oil gauge practically reading "0" on the gauge when I had the stock motor in there. I was actually surprised it lasted as long as it did since I really beat on it when it had just a 2 bbl and a stock engine Then I did the cam and headers on the stock motor and it took about 10 years more before the crank broke. I barely had 30-40 lbs going down the highway back then. So do yourself a favor and do the oil mods At least do the timing cover #4 heck who knows means nothing do the oil mods
great looking car, I like the 15" wheels better myself. I have 17" on my skylark, they came with the car but I really don't like them. I would probably run some old school 15" aluminum slots, or Crager SS or Keystone Classics on mine if I had some spare money laying around.
I carry around 40 to 50 psi on highway, 35ish at idle. I have a dual groove TA cam bearing and bigger pickup tube.
That top is faded (all the green tops do) which may/may not matter to you. The original top was about as dark as Sherwood green. My '70 350 4-sp is Seamist with a Sherwood green painted top so would've looked very similar to yours when new. Here's a picture of what a new green top looks like (my Stage 1 is this color combo) and another showing what the Seamist looks like against Sherwood, which is m/l what yours would'velooked like new. Good thing I like green cars, lol.
Nice car! It could be faded worse. it sat in a barn for 32 years. That's alot of time without uv light. I actually really like the Survivor look of the car. there are spots where bird poop sat on it for so long that it ate into the paint, door dings, etc... the cool thing about it is when you pop the hood underneath there is going to be a fully dressed engine and a freshly painted engine compartment.
Not mine unfortunately - Someone was nice enough to send it to me & is the only picture I have of what a fresh green vinyl top looks like w/Sherwood green. Mine (pictured here) is a 20 footer & has a white interior which should look really good when done - I agree with you re: the survivor look - If mine was nice enough I'd do the same. I just did the engine compartment on one of my GS's once and was very happy w/the results. When When I bought this one, it came w/a white vinyl top as the previous owner was going to change it. I was skeptical about how the green top would look but once I saw the picture above I was sold.
I hope you didn't take my comment on your top being faded as a dig at your car (why I added "they all do"). I certainly didn't mean it that way.
I didn't take offense to it. But It looks really good up close. Good enough that I wouldn't want to mess with it. But I can tell its faded some especially in the divets...almost looks like dust. Is there anyway or anything to apply to the top to bring back its color?
