Proper name for this 65 GM cigarette lighter component?

    Dear V-8 Buick "interior decorators,"

I'm trying to get the dash of my trusty 1965 Buick Special wagon nice and pretty. While I'm at it, I might as well replace components that are much easier to replace with the dash apart. One such item is the electrical "insides" of the cigarette lighter. Everything else looks in good order but this particular core:

As far as I understand this is a standard GM part used for over a decade. I should be able to find a new replacement part at any reasonable auto parts store and certainly somewhere online at a good price. However, my attempts to dredge it online have failed. I sure would like a proper name for it so that I can call a few local parts stores and avoid paying too much. Can somebody tell me what this 1965 Buick Special or Chevy Chevelle part would be called? For bonus points, could someone find it on an online discount auto parts place so that I have a baseline price to work with?

Thanks as always for all your help!

    Cheers, Edouard :beer

its the receiver housing, and there are several types, one for a rochester style lighter and 2 different for a casco

I propbably have what you need NOS GM, post a pic of your lighter..if it had brown bakelight between the knob and sheild with the element its rochester, it its just a knob and spring loaded element its casco, but you need to know the diameter and the length of the element...i have 100s of NOS lighter parts...

over the decades, they also changed the electrode from round to a flat blade back to round etc, they all work ya just have to adapt

Photos of lighter itself. (Re: 65 GM cigarette lighter component?)

Hi Jim, Erik, Mark, and V-8 Buick parts seekers,

Wow! If everything is as hard as this, I'll never get my trusty wagon back together!! [IMG]

Thanks to your info I'm reasonably sure it is one of the Casco models.

Not sure I've given you exactly what you need but I hope these pictures will be enough info:

    Here is the element end:

So would you have by chance a receiver housing for this particular cigarette lighter?

    Thanks everybody!!

No offense to anyone, but call the thing a power outlet and leave that stinky burny habit behind you, and use the outlet to power something useful instead of a smoldering, cancer-causing-vegetation-ignition-source.

You are SO right!!! (Re: 65 GM cigarette lighter component?)

    Dear SteeveeDee and V-8 Buick non-smokers . . . . but gadget junkies!!

Hmm, sorry if it seemed like I actually have used the cigarette lighter - at all!! The actual lighter is an NOS part I got in 1990 or so to replace the one that was lost when the car was stolen in 1986. I don't smoke so it has never been used.

So why might I be really interested in saving what you call the power outlet? Precisely because 1.) it is a 12 Volt power outlet and 2.) unlike the lighter, it is 48 years old! For years I was powering my telescope from the cigarette lighter jack. I even built a little power routing box so that I could power my telescope, boom-box and up to 2 other accessories. It clipped to the driver's side window and then was plugged into the cigarette lighter jack.

Today, you can connect anything from your GPS to your cell phone to the cigarette lighter jack. So while smoking is about to disappear, that jack may be responsible for a new social problem: texting while driving!!

So since I neither smoke nor text, may I please restore my cigarette lighter power jack?

I dont see why not. I took all the cig lighters out of the Riv and replaced all 5 with power ports. Each has its own little rubber cap to seal it when not in use. Also installed 20A modern fuses behind each one that is accessible through the ash tray when its removed like you would for cleaning.

The best advice yet! If you use your cigarette lighter outlet for anything other than the lighter, there is a risk of overheating the outlet, which can lead to disastrous results.:(

I cant help, i dont have any with a round electrode

Id never buy any of that repro electronic stuff, especially something thats always hot that has the ability to burn your car to the ground...ive had a few friends try that stuff and its a big risk...

Looking for both originality and function. (Re: 65 GM cigarette lighter component?)

Dear Briz, Tom, Korrie, and V-8 Buick 12 Volt power managers,

Well, I may well fit the car with some "serious" 12 Volt power jacks, but I don't want to compromise the appearance of the dash. For a daily driver, this car really looks in excellent condition inside and out. I am making some compromises on interior originality, but I want someone to be able to look inside the car and believe it was something Buick intended in 1965.

Should I use the cigarette lighter to power anything, it will most likely be a low power draw. Should I get back into Amateur Astronomy in a big way, I hope to be doing it with my other dream - a travel trailer. That will provide additional battery power sources.

Thanks Korrie, I did spot that. However, that page lists everything but what I actually need. When you take the cigarette lighter apart from the dash there are three parts: the bezel nut in the front of the dash, an outer metal housing that is listed at the bottom of this web page and what Mark described earlier in this thread as the "receiver housing." It is really the electrical plug. I did find what appears to be a close match at Impala Bob's:

Here is the picture from their website:

I was hoping Mark could get back to me with the precise part. It is silly, but I would like to be able to actually demonstrate that the cigarette lighter works. It is the sort of thing that is a bit of a "show off" when dealing with the hard-core originality snobs. If I can't find anything better, I'll probably snag the Impala Bob part and hope it works.

Thanks for all the help everybody!

    Cheers, Edouard :beer
