Isn't the deck height of a small-block Olds (9.33") taller than most other makes big blocks? And then there's the Olds big block at 10.625". Olds must have hired someone from Caterpillar to do their engine design in the '60s.

Hopefully your "low compression" Chevrolet can drink what Stefina's 12.2:1 compression Mercury couldn't....Let me know how it works, you may owe Stefina a few cold ones! :beer

I just looked at this for the first time. Larry drove the SC/360 in rounds last year when the Vette went down with rocker issues. Later solved and filled in so Rusty would have a race partner.

I qualified the car and he gets the credit yet never matched its qualifing pass (yes one pass that is all it took to beat the OLDER brother). He ran it most of Friday and all of Saturday. Age must be setting in and the left leg is atrophying with all that auto driving.

Tim A. thanks for the input. I feel fairly qualified to answer some of these questions. Not because like Dave I am an original owner of factory muscle but due to the fact that I have several of the cars you discussed and have been around several beyond my own that were very factory correct.

I have a 340+6 which is on the list. It was an original car with an NOS exhaust before tuning. Modestly quick but not fast. And with some minor work it ran as you can veiw above.

Picked up an 1800 mile Boss 351 in AZ when I was in college that my best friend ended up with. My 120K 100% original CA Goat kicked its butt routinely even with a/c running and me adjusting the power seat and FM radio while watching the Boss fade into the review mirror. Both had the factory exhaust systems still attached to their original motors. Except the original owner of my Goat, which she deemed to be to loud, added two more mufflers to the factory exhaust making for a total of 6!!! I could sneak up on anyone.

I have a 22K '70 Z/RS we are getting a start on this summer to prepair it for PS racing. The exhaust manifolds certianly will hold this back compared to the Vettes. Again a quick car but cetianly not fast.

My '69 Z/RS is correct right down to the chambered exhuast like it was built with. It is so weak that I gave up on the thought of trying to make the ridiculously huge 254/254 .050 duration cam and straw sized exhaust manifolds work. The cam dwarfs an LS6 cam!!! It seemed like such an effort I went and bought a Boss 302 to satisfy my 302 cube needs.

That 16K mile car was easy to make fast. I have lots of bore/compression to spare and it ran a 13.07 on NOS suspension pieces and paper air filter first time out. With some race detialing it should present itself nicely.

The Maher's and soon I am sure Tim C. do/will have MO's doing their best. And their best as seen is very good. I am thankful they have taken on the challenge as these cars are very special and a joy to see and HEAR. Does any small cube motor sound better than a Chevy 302?

I also have an ultra low option '65 2+2 K code Mustang that Jody has lot's of seat time in. He and I both can attest to the fact that it sounds fantastic but fast it is not but definitly fun. His convert 350 HO Pontiac made easy work of it last summer when he and his buddy were playing around in the two.

I guess my point is that Z/28's (DZ and LT1), Challenger T/A - AAR Cuda's and Boss Mustang's (302 and 351) had enormous reputations but the reality when I got each is none where stunners to say the least. All were very original cars but all but the Boss 302/351 would have likely fallen pray to any well driven 5.0 Mustang in pure factory guise. Ironically the Boss 302/351 were the only ones with an excellent for the time factory exhaust and exhuast manifolds in comparison to todays systems. Does that connect any dots...

    I hope this helps.

Make that two Donny. My motor is at the machine shop already and Jimmy is going to give the rest of the car some lovin' this summer. Hopefully next year she is ready to roll and quickly for Stanton.

I love the sound of big hp 327's......Actually liked them more than the 409's in the 62-64 Super Sports......66-67 L79 Novas were very sweet and used to tear up the 302 Z28's on the street.

    Thomas,

I think that your L79 Nova is great.:TU:

I really wish that I could have seen it up close, but it seemed that everytime I saw you,you were on the return road ,and I was finishing a run down the strip.

Hands down , the 66 L79 Nova/Chevy II ,in any level of trim, is my all time favorite Chevy, and one that I'd love to put in my coral.

Hope to see you at Stanton, where I can spend a few minutes checking her out.

Nice job wringing it out too!:3gears:
