Getting close to finishing stages of re-build / start-up of my 401 with Quadrajet. I'm reading that there is available a thin or thick carb base gasket. Not sure what to use ---- advice please.

I forgot to mention that I have blocked off the heat riser holes so may not need the metal shim ?

You are correct, the only job for the shim/shield is to protect the carb base from corrosive exhaust gasses. The regular "thick" gasket will seal everything just fine in your case.

Glad to help. Hello from "up north" (Michigan USA) where for now, everything's changing colors from white to green!
