Not sure every car or plant even used them.

All (two) of the A bodies I've worked on didn't have them. The B bodies all did, though. If you're worried about water getting in through the holes, use some duct seal to smash through the holes and tighten the nuts down.

Put some rope caulk around it before you install them if you are worried about water.

Never seen them ever. Dum-dum around the holes (outside) is all I've ever seen.

I've had a couple parts cars with them, both were early 70 cars iirc, they are completely useless, most the 70/72 cars used the speed nuts with some sealer on them, some used the nut with the free spinning washer, those didn't have any sealer. As tight as they fit against the 1/4 it's a non issue regardless imo

I would rather the water just pass through. The gaskets would trap moisture. Just the dum dum caulk around studs is all you need.

I think you guys are talking about plant differences here.
I have seen them before but NOT on any of the cars that originally came from my area. (Philadelphia)

But the guys are right they are absolutely worthless. I always used a little sealant. Plus if dirt gets in there to trap water, all they do is invite rust.

I even saw a guy once make them so they were big enough to show the edge once they were installed, like for a door handle. Had to nail him about that one.
