Any one here knife edged or bullnose,...remove casting ridges,... smooth the weight surfaces,..maybe even weight material removal even?? Doing an aluminum rod combo and looking to not only take some increase longevity but maybe even emphasize the effect of the aluminum rods and remove a few pounds off the crank so it will move that needle quicker Being it will have a deep SRE pan the crank won't be in the oil so I wonder how much effect profiling the weights will have
https://www.speed-talk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=20077 Maybe,....just casting ridges and call it good,..more research to do
My old 505 had a Moldex billet. Everyone knows they can be heavy. Mine was an aluminum rod combo so they took some significant weight off the crank. Not so much knife edge or bullnose, just reducing the counter weights on the lathe smoothing the sharp edges.
Hugger here’s the factory crank in my stage 2 engine. Nick sent the crank out and had it knife edged and polished, cost $250 in 2014 dollars smooth as chrome.
That's what I'm thinking,..more weight removal than anything,...hell just a couple lbs of possible would be huge in terms of response I feel like
That's a nice looking piece in there,..I'm sure the gains are very minimal if any,..but it's kinda of a when in Rome kinda thing I feel like
If doing an internal balance like I will ,.. Mallory will be needed regardless so not too worried there
Hugger I think the knife edging etc will help a wee bit with windage however removing weight then putting the weight right back in with Mallory to balance it .. really don't see any additional gains. I have done a few aluminum rod engines internal balance they still need Mallory to go internal balance.i have found what's bolted to the back of the crank make more difference..went from a 11 pound flywheel to a 36 pound flywheel that was a real kick in the nuts for killing quick rpm.
Mallory slugs,..dense steel to add weight where you need it,...drill holes in the counter weight and plug them with the heavier Mallory
Thanks for the explanation Hugger. Can you get near perfect balance internally with a mostly neutral external balancer? I'm more used to balancing precision external grinding machines but interest in the topic. Are reasonably priced balance machines with degrees and position reports available? Cheers, Mike
Looks like the BHJ ie one of if not the best there is,...never had one in my hand but would appear to be external balance
Here is a double knife edge lightened 11 lbs 494 crank I bought from Jan that I'm getting ready to assemble. 7.150 Crower rods, JE pistons.............We will see https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/stroker-crankshaft-494.363324/
The Flywheel does seem like the low hanging fruit in this equation. Plus it doesn't mess up the forces internal to the crankshaft(loading/unloading). "balancing" isn't exactly so simple?
