Since when did GM go soft on their trucks

I noticed the past couple days while on the highway the newer Suburbans and Tahoe’s have independent rears.
I understand people don’t work them anymore, and they’re bought for the room.
If they’re going to do that to the 1/2 ton Suburban, may as well bring back the full size GM clamshell wagons, now those are BAAAAAD ASS:cool:

What's with the pickup stylists the past few generations of trucks? Are they trying to make the ugliest thing possible to see if it will sell? (not that other mfg have anything sexay at the moment in my opinion either) The past couple years of Chev HD pickups are a great example of something they should not have sold.

They all look really aerodynamic :eek::eek::eek:. They look like big boxes. The higher they can make them the better. My F150 is kind of like that. They could get better mileage if they made the lines more friendly. But then they would not be TOUGH, and that sells.

    I wouldn't call the Oshkosh TAK-4 "soft".

What ive found is a lot of the new stuff looks ugly when you first see it. But over time the looks grow on you. Especially if you buy the vehicle.

They went independent rear suspension to accommodate the eventual switch to electric. Be able to use the same rear suspension rather a conventional differential is back there or electric motor(s). When ever someone questions GM's commitment to going electric, I point out that change because trucks are their bread and butter and they are messing with that.

It's a good thing that the manufacture's put their names on the new trucks. I wouldn't be able to tell them a apart otherwise...

I don't think that's quite correct. Not sure how much of the IRS is going to 'swap over' once it's electric-powered, but I could be wrong.
I have mostly read that it was mostly for ride quality.

I dunno - I have one of those 'big box' trucks ('21 Sierra 1500) and it's giving me 24 MPG, or about 8 MPG better than the 'friendlier' lines on my old 2500HD 6.6L (yea- I DO think a lot of that is less than half the displacement: 6.6L > 3.0L. ;) ).

It's kind of like a child. No matter how ugly the child is, most parents still think the child is beautiful because the parent is blinded to reality by love.

Have been thinking the same thing myself the last few years. Say to the wife That truck is just dog ugly with the big hideous plastic chrome grill and stubby 5' bed. A truck is a work vehicle and anything less than 6' is useless to me. Sure they raised the bed sides so it has the same cubic foot capacity and thats fine if your hauling gravel. IMO they shortened the bed to allow for a bigger cab . I'll drive my 01 F250 / 7.3 for as many years as I can.

I felt the same way back in the 90's when Dodge redesigned the Ram. At the time I felt it was the ugliest thing going down the road but now 20 years later its probably one of the best looking trucks out there. Still to much plastic.

Not sure where GM is headed, but I doubt it will be into my driveway any time soon. That new Chevy is u g l y and they ain't got no aliby, they ugly, heyhey, they UGLY! I might have done a GMC but I don't know anyone who sells GMC. I do know someone who sells Ram. So I spent our money on a Ram. Never bought a mopar before. Never even went and looked at one. I was a GM guy with family that retired from Janesville. Hard to dirty that nest but they did. Its a cummins diesel and I fully think it might be the last truck I buy unless something happens to it. Traded our 2003 K2500 that we had for 11 yrs on it.
Sad they got under the govt thumb and have to go to the electric route. Not sure how this electric deal is going to work but I don't see it going well. I'll keep buying the $4-7 fuel and see how that works out.

I had a 2020 GMC 2500 Siera Denali past tense. I was involved in a car vs Truck red light meeting. I was very disappointed in the amount of damage to the truck when hit by a much smaller Ford Focus. It ended up being totaled with over $33,000 estimated damage and would need a new frame. The repair was estimated at 6 months because of parts availability. I also didn't feel comfortable with the dealership staff completely rebuilding my chassis and body on an 18-month-old truck. I think I was better off starting over with a new truck but would have liked keeping the undamaged 2020 as I really liked that truck.
