Damn, that's a *horrible* tap job on that inlet. I did the one on my 4MV with a hand drill and bench vise, and actually got it lined up straight (go slow -w- lots of cutting oil). Even a nylon washer wouldn't save that job, as the seal is before the threads rather than behind them.

I have a few 4MV cores for my 430 which are good, others are in pretty bad shape. I'm still going thru them, but have enough for 3 or 4 fully operational 4MV carbs.

This is exactly why I built a specific fixture to install heli-coils in Rochester Quadrajet and 2G carburetors. Every Fuel Inlet thread insert I install is done on my Bridgeport milling machine and then the seal is verified by pressure testing.

"Cliff, do you have any carbs in stock for sale? or just do rebuilds."

We build custom units outright, no core required. Bad news is that currently we are backlogged well into next year.

+1 on the heli-coil installation Greg mentions. There are a LOT of folks armed with a heli-coil tap these days, throwing their untested junk up on Ebay. I hope that they are keeping their "day job".

At least 30 percent of our workload these days, is working on "rebuilt" carburetors folks aquired from Ebay and other sources......Cliff

Thanks Cliff...cant complain about being busy!
Where is a good source to purchase a carb?

Greg, do you have any basic rebuilt for sale?

Curtis, are you wanting a certain carb number for your car? I'm guessing not since it doesn't look like that one you have is original.

I have several 800cfm Buick carbs I am working on now. Since you have had issues, and you are an all around good Buick guy, I wouldn't mind sending you one to put on and verify that it would work for you. I have some 750's I am working on also for some other customers, but I think I have a couple left.

Send me a note if you are interested and we could work out the details.

    Update
    =======
After rebuilding my carb and posting pix here I found that...

1 - throttle shaft bushings were worn, and loose.
2 - the wrong choke assembly is on the carb - maybe from a pontiac

So Mark (a.k.a carmantx) offered to build me a carb, 800 cfm, bigger jets, new vacuum pod, tight throttle shaft etc.

I took him up on his offer.

It came today, I installed tonight after dinner and the kids Karate, my wife put them to bed and I headed for the garage.

Took the old carb off, put it next to the new one, moved all the vacuum plugs etc and air cleaner hold down. Used the new base gasket and bolted it on. Hooked up what was left like fuel, pcv etc.

I got a intake side of the choke from the board, and bolted it on, but realized that I have a carb spacer, and therefore it would not work. I left the spacer there for now, I have an edelbrock intake to go on soon anyway. Then no spacer, and the GS air cleaner can go back on. So no choke for now.

I did not put any fuel down the carb. Sat in the car, and pumped it. I knew gas was goin in as I could see small amounts of splashing gas coming out! never did that before! (it wasnt much but I knew gas was being pumped) Just a few pumps and it started. no leaks... time to go for a ride!

Throttle sticks open just a bit, I think my neighbor that helped me rebuild the old one stretched the spring when he removed it, I'll get a new one.

But man it runs nice so far.
It was getting late and I was keeping my kids and neighbors awake so tomorrow or Saturday I'll play with the screws on the idle and the front of the carb using my vacuum gauge to get 19" (I think) or close. Also will confirm timing too to make sure, car stays stead at 210 maybe timing is retarded a little, Id like to advance it a little if I can.

I was holding the break at stop signs a little hard as the throttle was not closing fully and it was so easy to spin the wheels!! Must be that 455 Im not use to in combination with a good rebuilt carb!

So far this turned out to be a successful upgrade :3gears:

    Thanks Steve!

so this carb spacer thats on the motor, its aluminum, about 1" (hence the choke not lining up and not being able to use the GS air cleaner)

The intake is an offy intake, and its not like a factory, I believe its a square bore? I wonder is that why there's a spacer?

If the intake is a square bore intake, then the spacer, also works as an adapter for the spread bore qjet.
