    Oh boy . . . here we go again . . .

I'm not sure if Guy ever really figured out exactly what all the components are from on the Reynolds car. Whatever they are, they are exactly the same as the ones on the Jones/Benesik car. The air cleaner looks like it's from something else off an assembly line, but before it had holes punched or a snorkel added. Just another one (in this case two) off piece. As for the two steel scoops, they are definitely one-offs, and partially, if not totally hand-formed.

Only need 1 guy to bid it up, haven't you ever been to one of these big auctions? Watch them point in the audience at no one in particular and record a bid. Ever wonder why sometimes they stop, and have to back the bid down? The "ghost bidder" got ahead of the real money bidder, and then the real money bidder stopped, so they had to back off the ghost bid.

I 100 and 10% guaranty it is not. Been down that road trying to duplicate it with my GSX race car and it is not even close...it looks like it should be by Internet pics but it's not.
So far what I could find is the top is from a '69 Z28 and bottom is a complete prototype.
I didn't even restore mine. For two reasons... 1) it didn't really need to be restored. 2) it is the only one in the world that is a survivor Stg2 air pan assembly.

Questions just from a lack of knowledge and been trying to read up on the stage 2.

The Air cleaner The top of a Z28 was my first thought when I saw photos, but the bottom portion looked like the std. GS without the snouts. Do the bottom dimensions match the GS bottom center?

Related to the car did it continue to be raced after being restored?
The auction ad states frame off restoration, yet its appearance is more of a modern 10.90 class car. Why was it not restored back to period correct?
My own thoughts are that will have a greater effect on auction price over anything else.

the spring attatchement is what I couldn't see as correct to Reynolds car but is late

Actually the top sealing ring of your air cleaner is for a '70 Chevelle with Cowl Induction. A '69 Camaro is very similar but is completely round on the outside perimeter. A '70 Chevelle is the same except it has the short section of the outer perimeter that was cut in a straight line (just like the yours).

When you first posted photos of yours many years ago I thought it looked familiar then it finally hit me...it's the same as my '71 SS454 Chevrolet! I pulled it off the car and compared to you photos and measurements and it was EXACTLY the same part. if you ever decide to create a duplicate setup for your race car, just use a '70 Buick 455 air cleaner from a big car, cut the snorkel and fill the hole, order a repro sealing ring for a '70-'72 Chevelle, and a foam seal for a '70 Olds 442 W30 (exact same diameter). This is what I did recently but I had to cut out the bottom of the air cleaner because I'm running a dominator carb.

Umm. I have to agree and disagree. You are correct on the base. It is as though Buick ( Denny?) took the air pan bottom from who ever or what ever department made it before the snorkel holes were cut into it and used that.
But I have in my hands a Z28 top portion and it matches my original top exactly.
Maybe the Chevelle is the same as the Z28? I'll look into that.

Gary...I could be wrong on the year. Maybe 68? but it is definitely from a Z28. The Z28 has that sliced off portion which is meant to face the fire wall.

It would have to be a '69 Camaro, '68s were flat hood only. The ZL2 "cowl induction" doomed hood started in '69.

With that said I did some more digging and the '69 Camaro airt cleaner is what was used (but refined/tweaked slightly) for the '70 Chevelles. Very minor tweaks that aren't noticeable once the rubber seal is installed (or foam seal in the case of your Stage 2 Buick). The ring (flange) of the Camaro is egg shaped to provide the clearance in short section of the perimeter, but the Chevelle is cut to provide just a little more clearance in the same area of the outside edge. Once again, not able to see this once installed with a seal.

Sorry for high-jacking this thread guys. Now we can get back to the red car. I think we might be surprised at the bidding for this car. There are not many Buicks out there with National race history, so there might be more people interested in this car than expected. Opportunities like this don't come up often but there's usually a nice GSX or Stage 1 at most major auctions these days. There are only two of these Stage 2 cars out there and I've got a feeling that Guy P ain't going to be selling his any time soon so this is the only one that will be available.

    Ummm . . .

Not sure exactly what you mean by that but the hood on the Jones/Benesik car is definitely Buick supplied. That hood came from the Buick engineering department, and it's from the "GSX" striped Stage II prototype car #4085. The hood, scoop, and air pan all came from that Buick engineering division car.

I would not say that until it actually sells. I could tell you a bunch of stories about cars being bid up with phantom bids. Mecum I think was deposed about this topic. I recall he admitted to having a friend call in phantom phone bids. I will let you look this up to see if my memory is correct and how he justified this conduct. I am not saying this happened here, but I am saying you need a real sale to price the car.

I signed up to this site to see if anyone can help My brother and I. We finally found and purchased our childhood dream car, 1970 stage 1 4 speed 455. The previous owner told us that it was his brothers car past down to him and claims that it was purchased by his brother in 1970 in Pa with the stage 2 upgrade option and the gear was shipped in the trunk and installed by the dealership? From all the research i can find out there on the net it truly appears to be the real deal..We would

appreciate any insight and someone who IMG_9369.jpg

steer us in the right direction to have this claim proven.

    Thank you
