Here is a picture of that high pressure hose compression fitting, With this fitting I used my old hose end on the pump side, This will allow me to change the end to any fitting that will fit a 3/8.

cray1801 Too much is just right.

Well I'm on the road :beers2:

One thing I've learned, I had no power steering for low speed turns on the first drive, and it was very noisy. It really takes some time for the air bubbles to work themselves out. I've now driven maybe four short trips, each time it gets better. You will likely have to add fluid after each drive to make sure your level does not get too low. Starting to feel good now!

Sorry, life's been hectic. My wife just got out of a halo brace so I'm finally able to breath again. My fitting inserts were pretty tight. I was afraid I was going to damage them putting them in the gearbox but once I got them started, I used the old hoses to really set them before I got it off the bench.

I have it installed, started the car and bled all the air. Yes, it took a few minutes. I flushed the old power steering pump before connecting it to the gear box, bought new lines for that and flushed the gear box before I connected the return back to the pump. Everything was pumping clear fluid before I sealed it up.

As part of my "No Leaks In '09" project, I still have the tranny pan and rear end cover off of it so it hasn't been driven with the new box but just idling before I dropped the tranny pan it felt pretty darn nice. I think it is beween 2.5 and 2.75 turns lock to lock. Can't wait to drive it now!

I used an 87 GN box from Advance Auto, the LEE kit for the adapter rag joint and metric-to-standard adapters plus new factory '70 hoses. So far, no drips in the last two months of just sitting.

Now that my wife can move around better and I don't feel self conscious about crawling under my car while she was laid up, I'm going to get it all back together this weekend and see what happens!

Does anyone know how to identify visually a GN box? My buddy has one that he got on a trade for a radiator and he said it's from a GN but my friend was wondering if there's a way to ID it as having come from a GN. Is the GN box the same as the Monte SS box?

Ken i'm not sure how you can identify it by the numbers, but it should be able to turn about 5.5 to 6 turns side to side. SS box is the same.

I picked up an Iroc steering box for the wagon, Will it need adapter fittings to plumb this box?
Does the steering box need any special fillings? I would like to use braided steel lines for it. Also a remote pump if I can find one to fit the SBB.

That depends on what year IROC box it is.
GM switched from the 45 degree flare SAE to a Metric thread with an O-ring seal sometime in the late 80's.
If you need to adapt to the metric hoses, either get the kit from Lee Manufacturing, or get adapters from NAPA.
You'll have to check the input spline diameter too...is it 3/4" or 13/16"?

Matt, how many turns lock to lock? Did you just replace the steering box and hoses or did you also replace the pump? You mentioned they had a new power steering pump but no "cannister". What do you mean by cannister? You mean the cannister that holds the fluid? Does that come apart from the pump? I thought it was all one piece? If you are really happy with your set up, I may duplicate what you did as it is cheaper than powersteering.com (although they do great work, I just can't afford that level of craftsmanship at this time). You have a 69 right? Did the box come with correct hoses? I didn't even think you could get hoses for our cars anymore. :Do No:

With the Camaro box you may need to modify the stops to get a decent turning radius. I am playing with remote reservoir mount right now. If you get on ebay and search for Sweet Power steering you will see what the racers use.

On ebay Sweet has the fitting for AN off of the master cylinder. Summit also has a kits for this. I should be getting mine next week.

Are you using v-belts or working on a serpentine belt setup?

Wow, I'm sure that's great info on that link, but it's so poorly laid out I got dizzy trying to figure out what was what.

So what is this 95 Grand Cherokee "Z" code box that Matt was referring to on the previous page?

There is a 'z' cast into the box. Visible on the top.
The other codes are stamped with paint on the end cap, often faded or gone.

Cool. Do all those listed above have a Z stamped on the box? Anyone know what the Z means in case I get a really young (or old) know-it-all behind the counter?

I thought the Z box is the variable ratio box. But, don't quote me on that.
