Ok...So my 4 spoke Olds Rally wheel was really sticky and my 3 spoke Buick wheel was not as bad,but sticky as well. So,I was asking a few people if they dealt with the stickyness. An old timer told me he had a sticky wheel and tried many things from a magic eraser, simple green and several other things, but none seemed to work too well and was much work. He suggested to me a remedy that when I looked at him, brought a laugh and an explanation. It was so simple sounding and I called him a fool. So last night while cleaning up, I decided to give it a try. Simple dryer sheets were his suggestion. I picked a couple out and started rubbing it on the rubber on the wheel. You should have seen just what gunk came off and how the stickyness was removed. Yes,you have to work it a little but 3 dryer sheets later,it is not sticky. I started messing with the Olds wheel tonight and it is as good as a new wheel. I also used Chemical Guys leather conditioner to help. Laugh as you may,but it seems to work very well...
I used Gain dryer sheets. Seriously,I am shaking my head and keep picking them up...lol We will see how long it holds up..
This is how much gunk these 2 sheets removed from the 3 spoke wheel. The wheel feels like a new one. We will see how long it lasts now...
Here's a better one. When the wife is away run it through the dishwasher. Don't get caught doing it though. Don't use heat, or heat dry. The hot water and dish detergent works fine. I run the one on my 67 through once a year.
A little update....It's been over 3 months since I did this to both steering wheels. The Olds wheel is in my house and the Buick wheel is in my Skylark (no heat).Today,I decided to see how the stickiness was on the wheels and was pleasantly surprised they both are not the least bit sticky. I think I will put my Olds 4 spoke up for sale in the spring as I don't have any car to use it on.I took another dryer sheet out earlier and rubbed the Buick wheel. It was as clean as when I started it.
For years I used GOOP white cream hand cleaner and worked wonderfully. Slather and work over the surface w/ hands and wipe off - done. Steve weim55 Colorado
