I’m replacing the cancel cam and found these washer pieces infront of it. I’m trying to reassemble it now, but I’m not sure if those are supposed to be there.
Those are inverted internal snap rings, and no they don't belong there. Someone may have tried to "shim" (take up) clearance rather than properly adjusting the mast/cup/steering wheel clearances (gaps). That is done by moving the mast jacket fore/aft.
I knew it didn’t look right…looks like another issue I have to deal with. So this means I have to keep disassembling to look into the mast jacket clearance.
Do you have a shop manual? If not, I can try and write up a "help procedure" tomorrow. (later today/Tuesday) It's not difficult, just getting to the places the loosen hardware so you can move the components.
I do have the service manual. I remember there’s an exploded diagram of the assembly. I’ve never done any type of work like this before, I just noticed this issue while trying to replace the broken cancel cam.
I’ve looked into the service manual and doesn’t seem any of those snap rings are used from looking at the exploded diagram. I also noticed my lock plate and cover isn’t right and it’s supposed to have 3 screws, but doesn’t. It’s also covering the lock pin when it’s supposed to align on the shaft. It doesn't seem its the original lock plate.
I see that plastic piece. May have been used on some assemblies, but it is usually a metal plate with the slot just like that and 3 screws, like you said. Is the "serrated" lock plate underneath? Did it have the factory steering wheel? Wondering if someone was in there before.
Yes, the car has the serrated lock plate under that plastic cover. The car had an aftermarket grant steering wheel when I got it. So yes, it seems like someone messed around with it. I really hope that lock plate is the only part that’s not original to the car.
I will be listing the lock plate I need in the “parts wanted” section. I’m not putting the one I have back on.
