What are the chances of swapping an open carrier with a new limited slip carrier and carrier bearings and not having issues? I'm hoping the required shims will be same.

Did it on my 9-3/8 Wildcat. Left the pinion in, but had to re-shim carrier bearings for correct bearing preload & backlash. Good luck.

Measure the backlash before you remove the old carrier, measure again with the new parts installed. If its about the same run it.

Don't forget bearing preload...not just backlash.

The backlash needs to be the same before and after. You might get lucky, but chances are not. Each housing and each carrier will vary. I can mail some shims to you,if needed.

Thanks Jim. I wasn't worried about getting backlash the same but never considered bearing preload. Have no clue how to check that in my garage. It's a new Yukon carrier.

Well preload is kind of a GRAY area...lol. I think GM says in the manual spin and a half with a good pull...LOL. Ok, very technical.
I use the 'if you can pull the carrier out by hand tugging on it and it comes out you are too loose.IF you are destroying shims and or the carrier is spinning tight... which is REALLY tight. then you need to back off.' technique
It really for me is a experience feel. I know that sound hokey... but it is what it is for me. I have been doing this so long only thing I check is the pattern and the backlash.
{preloads are all done be feel pinion and carrier.
