installed a new cam and put everything back together and car wouldnt run right. 350-4. i put everything together correctly just couldnt get a decent idle or performance from it. i originally played with the q jet thinking it was a carb related problem:error: then while standing there i noticed i had the coil neg and pos switched. i made it right but did i damage the coil? also it seems that i fried the mallory unilite that was in it so i switched that out for an old points dist i had now i get a decent idle but not very good performance. just wondering if a new coil would help? any thoughts? brad.

What type of coil are you running? Original or aftermarket? I have a MSD Blaster 2 coil and a 0.8 resistor is required for running with an old points distributor. The instructions say that the coil can be damaged if the resistor isn't used. I figure if a coil can be damaged from not having a simple resistor installed that, you can possibly damage your coil from burning you're distributor up. Seems as though they can be pretty sensitive. I just replaced my 32 year old coil last week and it definitely idles alot smoother with better performance. Even though, the original coil still works fine.

im also running a blaster 2. i wasnt aware that you needed to run a resistor with a point dist. its a 72 350 by the way. i always thought the original wire in the harness had enough resistance in it already. next step is to replace the coil but at the auto parts stoere they want aropund 80 bucks for a blaster 2. i know i didnt pay that much from summit. also thinking of installing an hei unit. anyone have any tips, tricks or suggestions? i know its been covered a thousand times before but! thanks, brad.:beer

$80 for a MSD Blaster 2? I got mine for $38 with the resistor and two ends for the coil wire. I didn't realize that I needed a resistor too, until I read the manual that came with the coil. As far as running a HEI unit, they have a post at the top of the small block page reguarding a timing problem with a 350 you might want to check out. I was reading up on it and people tell how to install a HEI unit.
