Haha. Similiar story: I worked at a Ferrari shop in southern california. We had one car in there called a SIATA. The best description of this car is it is an Italian Shelby Cobra. It predated the Cobra, and AC Ace by about seven years or so. It was penned by the same bunch that did a lot of the early fifties ferraris, such as the 212 Inter, and the Europas and such. They had a 2.0 V8 (sounds wicked!) and only 56 were built.

Anyway, I remember hearing a story about a SIATA (the one sequentially constructed after the one we had in our shop), that was rescued in the same manner as the boss 429 'Stang you speak of, StageD70.
He was in Tiajuana, and saw the hull (monocoque construction FTW!) in a yard, minus the suspension and wheels, with a couple of guys drinking beer on it, and yes, the umbiquious dog was chained to it as well. This guy also had a few Peugouets and Citroens in various stages of disrepair in the yard as well.

All total, the owner walked away with the car for $100. The original 2.0 Fiat-based V8 was located, as well as the suspension parts. The common thing for these cars in the fifties and sixties was to get a small block chevy dropped in. That particular car had a 327 in it for a very long time. Anyway, my two pence to this thread!
