In order for compression to build in the cylinder, both valves must be CLOSED. On the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve is OPEN. The piston only moves up the cylinder on the compression stroke, and the exhaust stroke. It will only blow the whistle on the compression stroke. Neat tool, but a waste of money IMO. Very easy without it.

I live near Mount Hermon, Louisiana in Washington Parish which is one of the 'Florida Parishes' on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain [the lake north of New Orleans]. Our property is a mile or 2 from the southernmost Mississippi state line near Pike and Walthall counties. If someone lives within throwing distance [100 miles?] I would be happy to drive over and pick up a loaner and even leave a deposit in good faith [if that person was uncomfortable with the loan]. That would really save the day which technically would be a few weeks out as there is yet much work to do before trying to crank for the first time. I work kinda' slow and methodically balancing maintenance on our place with my rebuild project. Sometimes maintenance comes first - like today [mowing for 4 hours plus]. I try to plan everything in advance so the right tools, parts etc. are at my fingertips when each 'moment of truth' comes. Of course the ultimate moment of truth on this build is cranking the engine and hoping all is well with the tranny too. Thanks Larry for the illustration, perfect. Thanks everyone for all the thoughts, advice ......... please send a PM if this is a possibility.

You should start a separate thread asking for a loaner carb in your area in the title. That will get more attention. See what comes up!

Yes, last week after visiting with a hot rod buddy I mentioned the idea of asking for a loaner on our forum and he said "I have one you can borrow and even have a can and pump." He's one of those guys that has everything but not a lot of GM stuff so he saved the day for me and he is only a few miles from our place. Thanks for asking.

Autozone has a loaner GM oil pump priming tool for $10. Money back when you return it. Insert into distributor hole and make sure it slips into oil pump shaft. Attach a drill and run until you have oil pressure.

Bill, it is all finished up. Runs good, good oil pressure and the Sniper EFI makes for an easy start. Running it first on a carburetor made the difference I'm sure. And later putting on the EFI was all I hoped for. Ron, I ended up with the one that TA sells altho' I could have just as easily used the old distributor shaft. Didn't know about Autozone and the GM loaner. Thanks everyone. To me the 350's are sweet engines.
