I had 2 chances to test the theories concerning converters for stockers. It was all good!

    1. My 1965 GS 401 had a switch pitch TH 300 automatic 2 speed and it was really holding back any performance with the 401 engine (high 15's in the quarter).
So I installed a 3.55 posi rear gear, TH400 transmission & kept the small 300 switch pitch converter (about 3000 stall).
At the track, great launches and mid 14's. on a engine with 90,000 miles on it. Had A/C, PS, PB and all stock engine. Well over a second improvement at the track.

    2. My 67 Skylark had a 340 engine and TH300 2 speed. I installed a TH400 switch pitch and the small 300 converter. That car was so much fun to drive.
SOOO-- My opinion is that a 3000 stall converter is a fun addition on any car that you enjoy driving. Just get a good one that is not sloppy. Good converters ( like JW's) drive like stockers, but add some fun when you hit the throttle. You won't regret it. IT won't suck up all your gas either, but YOU WILL!

Note. Think about it....Buick was the first one to develop and produce higher stall converters long before anyone else. You ever heard of a Dynaflow, or how about "switch pitch" Dynaflow. Yes. With less than 200 HP? yes.

This thread has been around for a while, I just should mention that inflation has hit the converters just like everything else.. here is the current pricing for the most common 9.5" units I sell.

TH 400/350- $769.00 Any stall speed, upgraded sprags and balloon plates available at extra cost for racers with transbrakes.

Triple disc lockup units for the 2004R, 700R$ and 4L80E are $895, again, any stall speed, and some HD option are available for these also.

All the above units ship for $40 via UPS ground.

Worldwide shipping available, I have shipped many units to Canada, and quite a few overseas. Extra cost of course.

To date, I have sold over 400 units, all with the lifetime warrantee, and we have only fixed a handful of them in the last nearly 20 years.

I also still do the Switch Pitch units, but cores for these are really becoming rare, especially the 12" versions.

So usually you have to send me a factory, unmodified one to rebuild/strengthen/modify, that cost is currently $425.

    Thanks
    JW

Larry, wouldn't a switch pitch be better for a heavy stock Buick? Vet

Oh yeah, the switch pitch is awesome. I had one of Jim's 12" VP converters. Ran my 11.54 with that transmission. I wired the converter to stay in hi stall the whole run. Lost some trap speed, but got my best ET to date.

You say You Had a Switch pitch.

    What are you running now?
What caused you to covert to a different transmission?

Reason i'am asking, because i'am interested in a Switch Pitch for my Buick. I really like having the ability to turn ON and Off the SP.
I would like to buy one of JW's units but he requires a core to rebuild and I don't have one, so that closes the door on that. Vet

I had a fixed pitch 400 built many years ago and swapped that in. I tried a 10" converter from Ultimate converters before going to one of Jim's 9.5" converters. The 9.5" converter is just perfect at any speed. I liked the SP, and it performed really well for me across all my modifications from the 13's, 12's and 11's. The switch pitch really needs a way to control it. I had an electronic control box made by member Bruce Roe. It worked really well. All in all, I prefer the fixed pitch for it's simplicity.

I still have my switch pitch in my garage along with JW's 12" converter.

Vet - get one of Jim's converters. It acts like a switch pitch and will wake your car up. Dropping the exhaust is a perfect time to change the TC.
Do you know what cam you have?

The Switch pitch is outdated it was badass in 1985.....but since the late 90s converter tech has surpassed it....it's cool for nostalgia reasons but that's it

Yes, it is outdated, but it is cool. Most people don't know what it is, and never heard of it. Even some transmission mechanics don't know what it is.
