See Jim's comments in the first engine thread, page 9. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.p...arry-s-motor)/page9&highlight=TSP+level+2+A-R

Basically, the first block had a weakness in the #4 main web. It went out of round when torqued, and hurt the #4 main bearing. Jim pulled the block apart when he did not like some of the numbers while testing a straight pattern cam in the engine. That block had about 30 dyno pulls on it due to all the cam changes and testing. From what Jim told me, dyno testing stresses the engine more than anything you could do on the street in car. This block wasn't up to the task. The block in this second motor is twice as beefy as the first.

Sweet!! (Re: TSP Level 2A-R (Larry's motor) Complete and Dyno tested.)

Howdy Larry, Jim, and V-8 Buick lovers of . . . . potent powerplants!! :3gears:

Yeah, that's what I would call it too!! :)

Looks like there is indeed a whole new world of possibilities for high-power engines that are much more pleasant on the street.

So pay attention gang . . . . it is almost like a whole new generation of big-block Buick engines for you to drool at!! [IMG]

Yup, flexed the block and took the top coating off the number 4 main.

It was a decent 70 block for 500 Hp, and I have no doubt that had I done the standard 4-5 power pulls, it would be happily motoring along in Larry's car right now. It was a marginal block for 550 HP, and no one knew it would make 600.. admitedly, we got a little carried away with the head work.

But it was flogged in cam tests, which always include a low rpm pull, which is really hard on the motor. It did not survive that program. First motor I have lost the mains on in about 50 builds, and the only one, under 700 HP that I have ever had an issue with the mains. Couple big HP race motors gave me fits back in the day, but that comes with the territory.

Instead of just fixing that block, I replaced the block and crank for Larry.. a whole new deal, from a very beefy 76 block I got in for a core this spring. This was also the first motor machined by Ron Flood (MNGS455) and I am very happy with his machine work, after giving it the evil eye during assembly.

That first block just "felt funny" when pulling the number 4 main to torque. A feeling you get after doing that pull several hundred times.

    JW

BTW.. while no one's business, some are going to wonder.. so here it is> Larry paid for 1 engine, and one only.

All the testing, replacement block and machining, crank, gaskets, bearings new roller cams ect came out of my pocket. Although my peers said they would "split the costs" in a situation like this, I didn't think that was right.

He paid for 1 dyno session.. I paid for the other 3.. this motor cost me money to LEARN from. 65 Builds later, and I am still looking to learn, when new tech comes about (hyd roller cam).

I took care of him completely... and built him something I would be proud to put in my car.

His only cost was patience, since we did the last dyno test when I had the old shop in boxes, just before the move.. so it took a while to get it all back together.

Thanks Larry, all good things come to those that wait.

Now the challenge for me is to build these things.. without that wait.. and that's coming down the road folks.

Is that a stock Stage 1 fuel pump on that engine? Do you have an electric backing it up?

    No Phil,
The Stage1 pump would never keep up with this engine. I went for the CV Billet pump that Jim sells. I've heard Jim say that this pump will supply enough fuel for "anything you care to put licence plates on" I have a Robb Mc 1/2" pick up and will have -8AN push lok hose up to the pump. -6AN to the carb.

Will your car retain it's good manners when you drive it on the street? Will pump gas be enough? It sounds like a beast!

It should. Aluminum heads make a big difference here. The DCR should be right around 7.8:1, and I have a great cooling system. Plus, this is a zero deck motor, which makes detonation less likely. I always add some leaded race gas at the track just for insurance.

Larry, what size headers were used for the dyno pull? And what headers and exhaust will you use for this combo?

yup, 10.550 Deck height, and we did more chamber work to his heads, which opened them up to 61 cc

His heads and your are the same in the chamber now, he has more portwork.

    Kelly,

The standard TA 2012 is my STG 1 dyno header, so they are 1 7/8 by 3.5

Larry will have to tell you about the car.

Not likely to see them in Jegs, but you will know who to call.. the idea will be to start stocking the major components, already finished.. those being heads, cams, rotating assemblies, machined blocks ect..

... so when you call to step up your game with a fresh 470 for that wagon, I simply take the parts off the shelf, assemble and dyno.. and ship it out..

This will cut wait time dramatically.. and I very well may build a few copies of the most common engine, for immediate delivery. I never will get too big, since I build all the engines personally. Nobody punching a clock will ever touch a motor with my name on it.

It's something I have always wanted to do, as it will make the entire experience more enjoyable for everyone. It's a tough thing to do, as overhead really hurts your ability to invest in the inventory to be able to do this.. but I cured that overhead problem now for the most part, and good things are coming down the road.

Most folks dream of exotic vacations or garages full of cars, I dream of delivering 600 HP BBB's in 10 days, and going drag racing on the weekend..

A good goal to work toward.

I have Mickey Thompson Super Scavengers. They are 1 7/8" X 3 1/2". I have a Dr. Gas X pipe that is 3" in front from the headers, and 2 1/2" out the back to Walker 17749 long case mufflers. 2 1/2" tailpipes with big stainless N25 outlets from Wheelz.

OK. That makes sense. And that's the exact same setup that I'm putting on my car right now. No more melted pistons for me.
