Well, Here is what I have done so far.... replaced the compressor and charged a/c .... no cool....:Brow: replaced the suction throttle valve with a kit from classic auto air to eliminate the stv....recharged.... no cool......:Brow: :Brow: replaced the expansion valve, vacumed down, recharged, still no cool, blew out seal on stv housing.....  called classic auto air back,,,, they advised that I had the wrong expansion valve,,,, replaced seal on stv,,,, still waiting for the new expansion valve.... by now i know more about the factory air system than i have ever known before....when the new expansion valve arrives , i intend to install it and then vac the system down and recharge.... it should work this time there is nothing left to fix....

    Ouch Doc!!

Are you sure the air is flowing over the condenser under the dash? Were any of the AC lines getting cold? With all of that work the system should have been doing "something".
Do you recall the pressure readings when it was running? That would be really helpful to know.

Yep, the air is coming thru and out the vents,,,, after I spent $49 for the duct hoses for them,,,, they were missing.... got the new expansion valve yest. will start putting it in today... the pressures were 70 and 125,,,, If I keep pecking on this thing ,I will make it work....:Brow: :Brow:

OOOOOK,,, nuther update...the expansion valve arrived and I installed it,,, vacd down to 29 in. .... held it for 20 min. with no loss,,,, installed 3 cans,,,, it cooled ,,, took it down to my friends shop and he said that I needed more gas in it,,,, after some discussion,,,, we decided to go for it,,,, now it gets really cold,,, but the high fan speed would work for a short time and then just shut down.... zero,,,,, zip,,,, went to town ,,,, got another blower motor because we figured the old one was 42 years old and was probably drawing a lot of amps,,,, when I installed it , low, med, works but high wont at all now.... looked at the factory shop manual and there is a relay inthe circuit... guess I replace that too.... but I did make it cool..... and I might have to replace the blower switch.... probably will just do both.....

    Yep,
Sounds like a flaky High Blower Relay or related problem.
Replacing the 40YO blower motor was a good idea because that's very likely what caused the relay issue.
I say "issue" because it's possible the relay itself hasn't failed. Look at the relay connectors. If the motor draws too much current, it can overheat the connector terminals and cause poor connections. The terminals lose their spring tension which causes resistance and heat, which in turn causes more resistance and heat....
I'm glad you got the refrigeration loop straightened out. That's the bulk of the repair.
Did you keep the old STV? If so, don't pitch it. It might be good or rebuildable. Cores for those are getting scarce.

Actually , I used a kit from Classic auto air in Arlington Tx. to convert the stv to a cycle clutch system... did keep the stuff out of the valve though... Guess I should get all the stv s out of the old cars that I have here before I scrap them.......

    Yes, do that!
I grab every STV and POA I see in the scrap yards.

Think about rebuilding your old one for down the road. Those kits work pretty good, but a properly adjusted STV/POA works better.
