Just started to look into getting a covered roof built and installed to cover our back patio. similar to what’s in the first picture below. I got Sticker shock for the first estimate. What do you think something like this should cost. Size and Scope of work is in second picture.

Including the labor and profit that you would expect from a contractor, I would guessitmate $20K-$25K, but my guesstimater may be off since I haven't done any of these type of projects in 5 years or so. Material costs are crazy high right now, since a large portion of the populations is working from home and fixing up their houses.

Wow, that's more than I would have thought. The wife and I have been talking about getting a 3 or 4 season room added where our deck currently is.... We may be rethinking that!!

I was thinking 15K since it’s just the roof. No sides, no screens. Just open. Quote was $25K and it’s from a reputable and quality contractor. I still need to get a second quote.

We added a 14’x28’ covered porch last year and it was nearly 50k.

Every market different depending on labor costs
But that quote you say from a reputable
Contractor seems like a good price to me

Always good to get more than one quote with contractors... and don't be afraid to try haggling. The type of tie-in that they have to use to the existing roof can make it a lot more expensive.

I built this covered porch this past summer/fall and it only cost me about $2,000 total!

There's ways to do things like this on the cheap. I know cause I'm a cheap jew lol.

Plan ahead, make a list of all the material things you will need. Search places like marketplace, Craigslist and etc for those items.

Just as an example, I purchased 37, 12"X12' non vented soffit panels for the ceiling for $40! They were new and never installed, just sitting on a guys garage shelf for a few years.

The shingles I paid $200 for 15 bundles or 5 square and they are the same as the other ones.

The mono rafters, 25 of them, I built myself and used 1/3 recycled 2X4's. Total cost was under $300! A local company that builds rafters wanted almost $1500 to build them!

The 7 original victorian porch posts I bought from an antique dealer. I bought them years ago and don't remember what I paid, but I know they were cheap or I wouldn't have bought them..

Don't be afraid to use some recycled/used materials.

After we poured the concrete I cleaned up and reused the form boards for part of the roof framing. It's all covered up and you can't see any of it.

I second the motion for haggling the price a bit, I have customers do this with me sometimes.

Wood prices have gone crazy too - at least in my neck of the woods. 4X4 8' PT $20. 1X6 fence board PT $10

This is what I do. Basic open wood deck using treated lumber = $50 per. sq. ft.
Trex or eq. composite, composite railings, trim $75-$100 per. sq. ft.
That roof structure is $40-$50k all day long. Lots of detail and trim, footings, flashing to brick.
