Which Carb To Buy? 470 ci, Stage 2, Street/Strip Car

    BUQUICK I'm your huckleberry.

Looking for opinions on a replacement pump gas carburetor to replace my current E85 1050 dominator. The carburetor must have a 4500 Dominator style baseplate so I can use my existing KB intake without using an adaptor (hood clearance is already very tight).

What carburetor would you buy for this situation? A box stock Holley 1050 of some type, or something from a different company / carb builder? I sometimes see people say "contact XYZ, he's the best carb guy around." Who is it?

    470 c.i., 10.5:1, ported Stage 2 SE heads, KB Wildcat intake (4500 flange), TA608 cam (hyd flat tappet, 258/272 @ .050”, .595”/.601”, 108 LSA), 2-1/8” headers, 3” exhaust with X-pipe, 4.11 gears, 3,500 lbs '72 Skylark.

This car is a street car toy and is not a daily driver and not a dedicated race car. I only drive it a few hundred miles a year and it only goes to the track occasionally on test and tune nights.

My existing carb is 1050 dominator that was modified by Mark Sullens to run on E85 but I am replacing the old 12.5:1 462 short block with the a 10.5:1 470 short block and I no longer want run E85.

Here is the old setup. If I get another dominator I can also reuse my Stage 2 setup without having to modify it to fit a 4150 carburetor inlet.

I have a basic ultra on my set up no issues

    Prosystem
    APD
And many others will "build it for your setup" not sure what all they do differently. My prosystem 4150 run good can say better than something else cause I never swapped it off to try.

I’ve been running a Quick fuel 950 4150 style that’s been performing well on my 430. It’s sitting on a super sucker 2inch 4500 to 4150 Adaptor / spacer. Works well on street and respectful at the strip.. I’ve just done the opposite of you. I pulled the 430 and Installed a 482 and Mark Sullens dominator on e85 recently…..

I just realized you were worried about hood clearance. I can’t speak on that. I added the stage 2 scoop a couple of years ago, I didn’t want to worry about clearance, but I’ve always like the stage 2 scoops on the cars so I haven’t looked back…

I’ve got a 9375 Dominator on my 530 right now, done by Dale Cubic. It’s run 9.50’s on my 506, and is too small for the 530. In it’s place is a 2.350 Cubic custom, sitting in a box, waiting for me to do the swap. The 9375 that I have would be great for your combo, but I’m not ready to part with it yet.

I do have a Stage 2 scoop already. I can't add a spacer or an adapter plate or else my current setup will require more modifications. I don't hate E85 but I'm getting away from it since I no longer need it with the low compression short block. Also, the hassle of E85 for me was 1) only a few stations in my area have it. My car is a street car and I drive it so I need access to fuel wherever I'm at, especially when drinking E85 because it consumes even more fuel (probably well into the single digits). 2) The E85 at the pumps in my area clearly state that the E85 may actually be anywhere from E51-E83. A fuel injected car can compensate for the variation and make automatic adjustments but a carb car can't. So the tune is hit or miss depending on what the local station has in their tanks on that day. I tested the fuel every time I bought it, and it was usually somewhat close to E85, but checking it was a stinky, messy hassle. I could never just pump it and trust that I wasn't getting E53.

Bob, now you are just teasing me. I was not aware of Dale Cubic but just looked at his website. I'm in a time crunch now since the GS Nats are almost upon us but I would like to have someone custom build one for my application. Maybe he could even turn my E85 carb back into a gas burner. My old carburetor is a 8082 (1050 2-circuit) made back in 1999. When it was burning gas it was great. No complaints from me on its street manners or track performance.

Were you happy with the DaVinci carb?
