Which clutch fan to use?

It's getting hotter by the minute down here in Hades (Florida) :( and I'm using my a/c more in the Skylark, and I am growing weary of watching my voltmeter drop every time my fan kicks. I'm getting ready to ditch that thing this week and go back to the stock clutch fan and shroud. I need a new fan clutch and am wondering which one is preferred, thermal or non-thermal?

Ideally you want a thermal unit. In reality they should be superior to a non-thermal unit, though sometimes you just have to try. I ended up putting a non-thermal on my truck because all of the thermal units would never unlock, and the fan can suck a bunch of power.

BTW, if you are looking to seel your electric fan give me a yell; I may need one soon.

I always liked the original thermostatic ones. They have always worked well for me. I recently bought one from CARS and was happy with the appearance. Seems like a quality unit.

I picked up a new thermal unit because I feel it would be the best one for cooling. I really hate to lose a few horsepower because every little bit helps. Pennies add up to a dollar so 2-3 horsepower here and 3-4 horsepower there and before you know it there's an extra 20 horsepower, but it's in the mid-90's down here and humid so I'm going to make the sacrifice. I'm thinking a little bigger cam will make up for it

Don, I don't think I want to part with the electric fan at this point. It's a self-contained unit with the shroud, a Flex-a-lite S-blade black magic extreme and if I remember right I paid around $300 for it and other than the current draw it has always worked perfectly. I might have another use for it someday, or when I swap in the 455 I may do some well needed electrical system upgrades on the car and put it back on.

I've got a 100amp althernator in it now. Too late anyway, I've already changed the fan. Cruise night tonight and it's 96 degrees here today with a heat index of 105. Florida sucks in the summertime.

I'll vouch for the heat here right now. I'm going to my first cruise in in over 6 years tonight in my 72 and it is very very hot over here in N.E. Fla
