Which grille as a repro?

Discussion in 'Repro Parts' started by death by buick, Jul 20, 2004.

  1. Which would you like to see first - a quality, affordable reproduction of a 1968 or a 1969 Skylark grille?

Also, is anyone interested in a chrome-plated PLASTIC reproduction of the grille surround for either of those two years?

I have a lot of experience producing low-run tooling for the farm toy industry, and have the equipment and contacts to make it a reality. (a carefully maintained mold could produce 20 to 30 quality parts before being retired)

  2. 68 GS grille.

I don't know about plastic for the surround though. Even the original steel surrounds got bent down over the years from guys leaning on them. I see a lot of original 68 surrounds on ebay, in restorable condition, so I don't know if the demand would be there, especially in plastic. JMHO

I'd be thrilled to have either one. As long as I don't have to drive around with a big gaping hole between my hood and my front bumper...

Personally, I kinda prefer the '69 Skylark grille.

I think there are plenty of chrome surrounds around, I would just worry about the plastic grille itself. Just my opinion.

  4. Yeah, we need both years reproduced, that's for sure. Some guys in the past have suggested picking one, and expecting the "other" model year owners would be willing to change from one to the other, just because it's available. Not very likely. That's complicated by the fact you need the year-specific surround to go with the model year grille you have. I have a 68 SW grille on my car for now, with a nice GS version that will go on eventually, but it's showing some warpage along the top of the grille. I would spend for a nice repro in a second.

We're in dire need of a 67 IMHO. Haven't seen a good one in a long time.

My vote is for a 68 grille. I would buy a good repo in a heartbeat.

  18. Frank McIntyre has announced that he will have 69 GS grilles in production. Sounds like there should be something to see within a matter of months. He's also going to do 455 throttle cables soon.

Dave is he going to do all the grills :Do No:

how was your trip to Ohio :Brow:

  20. Had a blast in Salem! The trip wasn't much fun, but wasn't soooo bad other than the trip thru/around Chicago on the way there. At least we got there and back with no breakdowns of any kind, and I made a couple dozen passes too.

Frank is starting with the 69 grille, and if it goes well, will probably look at other years after the 69. I don't think he, or anyone, can plan more than one at a time.
