Anyone have on hand a good harmonic balancer who could compare with these two pictured please. I have two harmonic balancers here, but which one has moved ? If you look at the yellow markings in relation to the keyway and the timing mark, they are different. One has moved ? Which is serviceable and which one is a bin job ?
you can check too by bringing number 1 piston to top dead center and then see where the timing mark is at.
I have been scouring the internet to find pictures. The few seen so far points towards the brown one being correct. Would still like a confirmation if possible. I will try the TDC option. Because engine is in my project car, access to turn over via balancer bolt is difficult / cumbersome.
You may have two different part number balancers. One for early engine one for late engines and I believe the timing mark location was different between the two
I just checked one of mine, from a 1966. The timing mark lines up with the keyway. There is a new unit avail from TA Performance for the 455, it can be modded for a Nailhead. There are places that can rebuild yours as well, tho they're on the other side of the world from you: https://www.damperdudes.net/
I am using a modified 455 unit. Just want to make 100 % sure I have the new timing mark correct. Having an issue getting the engine to purr nicely at idle. There could be other issues involved, just want to eliminate this out of it. Walt, if your balancer is loose can you take a picture of it and post here please.
The modified 455 unit has a slightly different mark for the nail head versus the 455. The Mark with the yellow line is top dead center for a 455 and the line above it is the top dead center mark for a 401 or 425
Mate, you are a genius for posting that ! Thankyou, that's EXACTLY what I'm looking for. That means I have the timing correct with the 455 balancer. Will now start to look for other issues, maybe vacuum leak somewhere ? No need to go to any trouble now Walt.
While those two externally balance the motor where the hell is the absorption section to null firing vibrations/ Crank flex?
